Trunk Springs

Is it a common issue with the Avalon or did the previous owner just break it... my trunk springs came off the track and it the trunk will not stay open on its own (the lid is pretty heavy without the springs [bars]).

Is this an easy fix? Has anyone else had this problem?

260$ to have it fixed at body shop - the tension bar clamps are integrated into the trunk hinges there is no separate part. 58$ each hinge from Toyota. I would do it myself but I don't want to screw it up - the back seats have to come out to take off the rear deck cover where the fasteners that hold on the trunk lid hinges are.

Please be sure the body shop understands these are reclining seats. I have a post here about replacing the cables, and you should point out to them that, while removing the bottom seat (bench), there are cables to which they need to pay special attention. As soon as they pull the seat - pay attention.
Of course, since they're the bodyshop, they probably know all that

Thanks for letting me know that, although the body shop I went to has a good reputation, I don't trust any repair shop of any kind until they have proven themselves to me - I will ask them about it/point it out before I let them touch it. Thanks again.

You did not disclose what model year Avalon you have. I have an '05 and the trunk lid torsion bars are definitely not integrated into the hinges. I posted the factory shop manual instructions to replace them here:

I have a silver 2006 Avalon Touring.

Thanks for the information, however the problem is not the torsion bars themselves. The problem is the torsion bar clamps. The clamps or support brackets (as described in your drawing) are what the torsion bars connect to, and those clamps are damaged, the one on the drivers side is just bent, the one on the passenger side is broken.

Thanks for posting the info - if I do something crazy like cut off the support bracket on the passenger side and weld in a replacement, I will use these instructions to put back in the torsion bars.

Upon doing further research - it's not just me. For anyone else having this problem it is a TSB
