IPOD adapter install on 2006 Avalon

IPOD adapter install on 2006 Avalon

Hey guys and gals. Wanted to share with you my IPOD adapter install on my 2006 Avi with JBL stereo w/o nav. Removing the console and stereo/panels was not very difficult once you have instructions. The USASPEC PA15-TOY adapter is very easy to install and works as advertised. It has an auxilliary input which I used to connect a Kenwood Excelon KOS-A300 External Media Controller. I can connect my music pendrives or IPOD to it; also has Bluetooth feature and Sirius/XM or/and HD radio option. I installed the Kenwoods display where the ashtray/lighter were. I put the joypad controller where the seat heater controls would have been. The price for the Kenwood was a special, just $80.00 at Crutchfield; regular price $320.00. Works super great and display is awesome. Ran the IPOD and USB cables under the console and into to the compartment behind the joypad. Whole install took me about 4 hours. Here are some picks of the install. Enjoy!

Yes, the ashtray and lighter used to be where the Kenwood display is now.

I just received the Crutchfield cat. over the weekend. My wife was asking about the same ipod adapter

what trim do you have? XLS? the big control you placed is where the heated seat controls were. What happened to your heated seat?

What happened to the steering mount audio control? Does it have any effect on it? Who's the bluetooth? ok? good? My wife really want BT on her Avalon. (Limited with NAV so not sure how the installation works)

So the Kenwood unit let you plug in any USB drive with music files on it and PLAY? thanks

Trim is XLS; didnt have the heated seat option. Not available nor needed in Puerto Rico since temperature rarely goes below 65-70 degrees.

Remember I installed 2 different adapters. With the USASPEC PA15-TOY IPOD adapter the steering wheel controls work fine and also the Avalons display. The Kenwood is an auxilliary input device which is able to control various devices like IPOD, XM/HD radio and Bluetooth connectivity to your cellphone. You need extra modules for the Bluetooth and Sirius/HD. With the Kenwood you can control only volume via steering wheel.

In the Avalons case the Kenwood must be connected to the USASPEC's auxilliary inputs for it to work; so you need both adapters.

I use 2GB pendrives for my mp3's and they work fine. I tried an external USB 20gb laptop harddrive but the adapter doesnt have enough DC power output to make it work.

The bluetooth is pretty cool, I wonder if there is a module that is more dedicated for blue tooth w/ less of the other stuff. I have the PA15-toy that I wrote a guide and have it set up similar to yours: Installed a pa15-toy iPod/iPhone adapter in my Avalon

I love how you can control the music through the CD controls. The only problem I had with mine, is that it doesn't show the text on the screen. It shows track/time only. The only way I got mine working with text was not reliable enough to use it.

I also didn't know some Avalons came with ashtrays and cig lighters. All the ones I have seen up till now had tape decks and nav controls.

Checked your thread and noticed your radio is different from mine. I use the AM/SAT button to control the PA15-TOY. The song thats playing appears on the display. You're not missing much because you can only see the first ten caracters(including spaces). They do not move or scroll so display is basically useless. Maybe the people at USASPEC can address this problem in future releases. Here are a couple of pics:

Here's the steps to remove the radio panel and the head unit:
  • Disconnet the negative battery terminal to prevent an accidental short circuit
  • Unclip and remove the small trim piece from the left side of the panel above the vent (the wood trim piece). It removes by pulling it out (fingernails, small screwdriver)
  • Unclip and remove panel above the steering wheel (the part that surrounds the start button).
  • Unclip and remove entire panel surrounding the radio, including the A/C controls and vents.
  • Remove the head unit by removing 4 10-mm bolts securing it in the dash.
  • Unplug the wiring harnass(es).
  • Install is the reverse

2 Quick Questions. BTW, love the install...

- How is the audio playback from the USB? Any distortion.
- Bluetooth integration. Have you used it with your cell phone to place calls? Do you need a separate mic?

Thanks
