I purchased my Avalon last November. Starting a few months ago I started hearing a ticking sound like you might get with lifter problems. Since then it has gotten worse and worse. Now that it is getting colder it is very loud for the 1st 10 or 15 minutes after starting the car. It becomes much louder upon acceleratiion from a dead stop. After 10 or 15 minutes the volume lessons but never completely goes away. I did not have this problem last winter despite being in 5 degree Nebraska weather over the Xmas holidays. I can't believe this is normal, although, the local dealership is indicating that it might be.
My 07 does the very same exact thing. I use synthetic motor oil and toyota filters. No difference among brands of oil. Oil is never low at change time, gas mileage is identical, etc. I hope it isn't hurting it, but its definitely there on my 07 as well.

My car has 14,450 miles on it and it started happening 3 or 4 months ago. Only recently since it turned cold has it gotten really loud. The dealership blew me off and basically told me that the loud ticking sound for the Avalon was a feature I would just have to live with.

That's not good enough. You can't just explain something odd/unusual/unpleasant as a "feature". May I suggest you return to the dealer, ask to speak with the service manager and explain your displeasure with the "feature" and how you're feeling 'blown off'. If you don't receive an offer to take another serious look at the issue, explain to them how your next step will be to take it up with your state's attorney's office. Be calm, be friendly, be serious.

I live in Fort Smith, AR and that is the dealership I took it too. I actually purchased the car new in Tulsa. Thanks for everyones comments. I will be in Tulsa next month and plan to have the car checked out there.
06 Limited, same thing. Had 2 dealers looked at, same thing, no problem. Then I talked to my TOYOTA mech. friend, he told me the 3.5 engine does have the ticking noise. Not every engine but most of them has certain degree. He told me as long as there is no leak (especially from the VVTi rubber line on earlier model, they switch to metal later), should be find.
He also pointed out that since the Avalon has a queit cabin, which actually make the noise more noticeable.
our engine has 83K miles
