Need somes suggestions on tire sizes. I just bought some 20'x8.5 wheels with a 40mm offset. I have read some other threads, and no one has really address the issue of tires rubbing in the back. A few websites suggest 245/35/20, but I have heard that with those tires on it would rub. Do anyone have 235, or 245 series tires that do have issuses, and what was the fix?

I found your thread, and I want to thank you for the info.
I have a 225 35 20 on my 20s with a 35+ offset WITH NO RUB ISSUES WHATS SO EVER FULLY LOAD WITH LUGGAGE AND KIDS NO RUB EVEN ON BUMPS.it sucks if it rubs man get the tires that fit with NO rub..its embarrassing to me actually get your ride right..The rub will be on the inside toward the rear shock braces..its mainly the width thats the issue..Now i have 19s with 225 45 19 tires and no rub..so IF u have a 225 your straight. no problem..235 you start to risk it...Most people will not tell you they bought the wrong size tires etc,if there ride rubs...I did just what you are doing, looked into it before hand..who wants to have rub issues then you want to change the tires but we all know thats not cheap.Just get the correct size before you buy man.
245/35/20s will rub, I have 42mm offset on 20X8.5" but the rubbing is minor and only happens when backing out of the driveway with the wheel turned to the left about 1/4 and I back out over the curb; forwards is fine. This rubbing is on the driverside mudflap protruding plastic rivet and could probably be eliminated with a low profile self tapping screw. I rub in the rear rarily when the situation is the following: at freeway speeds with people in the rear and a really large bump/freeway transition. There is actually only one place this happens and is a couple miles away from my house on my commute as they are redoing the freeway for the 3rd time now and the transition is from where the median is typically back over to the completed section. I am assuming this rubbing is on the strut tower via inner sidewall of tire as I see no visible signs of fender or other damage to tire. These scenarios were not noticed until a month or so of driving and therefore to late to really push the issue with the local tire shop 1000s of miles later. Next time I will consider the 235s, but will not go as low as 225s.

35+ offset with 225 NO RUB..go on Cardomain in the Avalon section and message people with 20s and ask what tire size they run and IF they have a 235 35 and higher they rub...And if they say it doesn't they are BSin OR they have NEVER put people in the back seats and hardly drive it...Im telling you...I went to 3 wheel shops in my area and they all stated 225 is the best solution to be SURE you get NO rub.I HAD to make sure it did not rub.I have kids and a family to drive in this car and i refuse to deal with rubbing. So i made sure it was RIGHT..AND IT IS AS YOU CAN SEE..the AVADON stands proud baby.MAYBE if you drive like a grandma and never have any weight in the back it wont rub but who is gonna do that every time they drive the car..you never know what might come up..Y have a car you cant drive the way you need to? Ive given my opinion on 3 tire size treads, to each there own but if you want it right ask the people that have it right. If i ask some one what tire size to use and they say they have this size BUT it rubs, that is not the size i would be going with not matter why or how it rubs,IT RUBS period if you want no rub..225 35 period.
I guess I will need to go to 225 then, cause I drive my avalon like I stole it and love to take corners hard. My next upgrade is to try the JDM Racing 19MM or 21MM rear sway bar for the Camrys to tighten things up a bit.

Well,Im just suggesting,,BUT if you still wanna drive it like you stole it and have no rub yes you need a 225 then..And im sure the sway bar will help with handling and stop the roll of the body some.
