remote starter and auto lock unlock not working

Hi
I own a 2006 Avalon XLS (no smart key) which came with Toyota factory installed remote starter (VIR). The remote starter was working perfectly fine so far since i bought this car from the dealer. Today when i tried opening the car trunk/even tried unlocking my car with the remote the car failed to respond as if the remote was dead. I thought it could be battery and so i tried with other remote and that too failed to respond. But suddenly i heard my car getting unlocked after pressing the unlock button continuously and moving close to the car.
I am able to unlock and lock when i am seating in drivers seat inside my car and when i hold my hands near to my passenger seat or even to the sensor which is mounted on the glass/windshield glass. So i am not sure as to whether it is a battery in the remote or something wrong in the auto start ...i tried pressing the lock 3 times to auto start my car ...it just beeps for the lock 3 times and then when i continue pressing lock key it does not auto start
So there are 2 issues
1) the auto lock unlock does not work from distance ...works only when i am inside the car or works very rarely when i am trying from outside but i have to stand very very close to my car or point my remote to the dashboard where the auto start sensor is mounted
2) the remote start does not work at all whether i am in the car or outside the car

I have tried both of my remotes. i have not changed the batteries in the remote since i bought it in 2009 Feb.

Any help is greatly appreciated. I am thinking to change the batteries in the remote and see if it works. I am not sure how can both the remotes stop working on the same day or same time

Thanks in advance

It sounds like the battery is dead. As far as both remotes dying at the same time here is 1 scenario 1 remote battery went dead a while ago but being that you only used the other 1 you didn't notice that it's dead

I agree. Replace the batteries in both remotes.

Guys thanks for the reply. I thought of the same may be it was a battery. To my surprise the locking/unlocking started working again in the morning and i was also able to remote start my car. i didnt try it from far distance but it went better compared to yesterday. But anyways thanks i will keep a watch and if this happens again i will try changing the battery first on one of the auto locks
