Avalon Brake Master Cyl Recall

Arrived in mail yesterday - haven't actually read it - wife mentioned something about a seal replacement...

Curious to hear who's had it done and how long it took.

Thanks for your time.

I had it done before I received my recall notice. Took the Avalon in for an oil change and the service writer asked if I wanted to do the brake cylinder recall at the same time. I was there for no more than 3 hours.

Got mine in the mail also. I am tired of these recalls with the NO CHARGE to you statement! The closest dealer is 35 miles away. Time and fuel is a charge in my opinion. I think after two recalls they should start paying me to bring the car in.

And in that Toyota document - they blame the problem on non-Toyota brake fluid

"The Genuine Toyota brake fluid used during vehicle assembly for vehicles sold in the United States contains polymers. The polymers act as lubricants for certain brake system components. If during vehicle maintenance, brake fluid is used that does not contain such polymers or only small amounts, a part of the internal rubber seal (brake master cylinder cup) located at the end of the brake master cylinder piston may become dry and may curl during movement of the piston. If this occurs, a small amount of the brake fluid could slowly leak from the brake master cylinder into the brake booster, resulting in illumination of the brake warning lamp."

Now if that were REALLY the case - Toyota would have included instructions in the owners manual mandating the use of ONLY their brake fluid.

Are these 3rd party brake fluids destroying the seals on Honda's - Fords - Dodge - Chevy - etc as well?

Blame it on someone/something else.

so the work on the recall is to replace the "brake master cylinder cup"? Is it the plastic cup (white) that hold the brake fliud? Will they replace the fluid as well?

The brake cylinder cup still look old too me, I wonder if my dealer really replaced it :...

I read this as they can not control all the other products out there, so they are installing a part that will take the abuse of products that are manufactured to a lower spec. A recall is taking responsibility for something you designed that needs improvement whether it is for your issue or unforseen circumstances. One would want the design failure mode and effects analysis to capture this, but perhaps the different materials were not thought of or did not exist at the moment of creation of the document. The question that I have is, what prompted the recall? Is this proactive or reactive? It seems like a proactive move.

They are supposed to flush and bleed the whole system.

More CYA....after the fiasco with a computer chip(s) that were in random cases doing what we call in assembly language programming "branch and link to register ? - ? = one of x number of general purpose registers - but branching to the wrong one based on bad elect. feedback" - they decided to pull in the herd again for another round of revamp.

I continue to find it interesting that the rest of the industry is not experiencing this problem using after-market Dot-3.

Their car/truck prices have gone thru the roof - covering their losses from all the $$$ shelled out for recall work.

When I'm done with the Toyota's being driven by my better 1/2 and myself - we'll be off to something else. This brake situation makes it recall #4 - way too many for this cowboy.
