General questions

I have a few questions about my 05 Avalon XLS so I decided to make a general thread so every time I have a simple question about my car I don’t have to create a new one. First off I bought a new set of spark plugs Bosch IR fusions for my car I figured it couldn’t hurt anything since the ones that are in there I’m pretty sure are the originals. Well after looking at my engine it seems like changing them is going to be kind of a big job, I was wondering if the dealership would put them in for me considering there not the denso and what I could expect to pay? Any input would be greatly appreciated!

Regarding the need to replace the plugs - the original ones aren't scheduled until 100k miles. I recently swapped mine and notice absolutely no difference between the OEM ones and the new ones.

How much your dealer will charge you to swap plugs that you bring in is a question you need to ask your dealer. I can tell you from past experience that when someone would bring parts (oil and filter was the most common) and ask to have them installed the first thing I told them was that I would not warranty them beyond driving off the lot and I charged a labor premium for installing parts brought in (to make up for the loss of markup profit). It's akin to bringing a steak to a restaurant and asking the chef to cook it for you.

...just my opinion...

My car just hit 116,000 so I think it’s time, is it really that big of a job it looked intimidating but I could probably just do it myself I don’t have a torque wrench though so I couldn’t really torque them to the exact specs. Since this is the first car I’ve ever owned that was made after 1990 I wanted everything to be the best of the best and perfect

I like that idea

We have Toyota cars for long time (different model, years...) and only had spark plugs done once on my be gone 97 Camry @ 60K miles. I sold it at 182K and I really didn't remember why I did the spark plugs. I guess it was back then the 1st NEW car I bought and tried to do all 30K, 60K, 90K... jobs. Since then, I never bother replacing spark plugs on all Toyota we have/had. Just don't need to.

As for the 05, they are very solid unless something is wrong, I really don't see any reason why you want to do that. Kind of "waste" money too you know.

I guess I got sucked into the part store "NEEDED" maintenance hype. I already bought the stupid things so I’m guess I’ll just hang onto them. One other thing I was just wondering is the TOYOTA OEM oil filter any different/better/worse than a Bosch, Purolator, Mobil 1? I haven’t bought anything yet just wondering I planned on just getting the OEM. But like I said I want the best of the best.

For some reason, Toyotas don't like Bosch plugs. I would return them and get Denso(Toyota) or NGK.

I think Avalon has cartridges style oil filter vs the regular can type filter.

I stopped DIY oil change about 10 years ago due to age and too much work I did visit part store from the dealer and seen they have oil filter cut open side by side with the "orange" brand oil filter. It does look different and has better quality.

I have another kind of odd question I was in the auto part store the other day looking at oil and it was around like $8 a quart I went to Wal-Mart afterwards and the same type of oil was like $5.50 the only difference on the bottle anyway was it said Wal-Mart in large letters across the bottom. Do you think that Wal-Mart would put cheap oil in the expensive oil jug and try to say that it’s good? Does that make since to anybody but me?

There are few companies that can match the buying power of big-box stores like Walmart. And it's not uncommon for big-box stores to have common products rebranded as their own.

Besides, if you stop and think about it, Walmart really wouldn't want to put an inferior product on their shelves when they know that a failure (such as a car's engine) caused by their product will come back and bite them in the butt!

Because Wal-Mart is the shit.
That is where I get oil, transmission and brake fluid for all our cars, than pick up Wix filters from Oreilly.

big box store putting smaller store out of business
Yes, WM has greater buying power vs smaller shop. I remember the old day, going to an autostore was fun, you see lots of stuff, how I do something with my "1st" car...

Too bad I am just a normal human and I do shop at WM (to protect my wallet) However, I only keep my buying on toothpaste, shampoo kind of things
