I've had some experience with open-element intakes in pickup trucks and Mustangs. Surprisingly, there's no more debris and dirt or water (unless you're off-roading!) than with an OEM intake system.
One issue I notice repeatedly is heat soak. If you're sitting still at a light or in heavy traffic and then want to accelerate quickly you'll notice a distinct drop in power. The underhood temperatures raise quickly when there's not a lot of abmient air entering there. The open-element intakes (unless they're blocked off from the rest of the underhood area) will suck that hot air in. Cooler air allows for a more dense air/fuel mixture.
But on a personal note - the Avalon is a quiet cruiser. I wouldn't want the throttle roar of an open-element intake system disturbing my peace and quiet. For that I'll hop in the Mustang!
