Buying a 2009 Avalon XLS with 55,000 miles on it.

Does anyone have any words of wisdom about purchasing a 2009 XLS with about 55,000 miles on it? I have come across this car that seems ok and the price is good but I am a bit apprehensive about that many miles on an '09 model. Any thoughts?

That just suggests to me that many of those miles are freeway miles - and that's a whole lot better than stop-and-go driving. If the car's been maintained properly there shouldn't be any issues. 55K miles is nothing for a modern-day car. My '07 with over 100k miles runs like new and everything works on it. There's no doubt I'll get over 200k out of it easily.

Tom is correct the only thing I would do is the the history of the car. It could have been a "Fleet, or Rental".

I agree. 55k might be nothing if it's all Hwy miles. If the rest of the vehicle is clean and the title history is clean, with the right price, it could be a steal! If you have a good mechanic who will check it out and clear it, you might be in for a great ride for many years to come!

A 2 year old car with 50K is not all that unusual.

I bought my 07 in 09 with 58k. I have 70 on it now after barely over a year. It'll have at least 90k on it by this time next year as my commute went from 14miles round trip to 86 round trip. Its been good so far. Comfortable car for a 45 min commute.

The dealer's ad says one owner lease return. But I will talk to the dealer and request a print out of the vehicle's history.

...and even then - think about it - people are worried about "fleet" or "rental" and although it may be true that the cars may have not been "babied" when driven as a rental, you can almost guarantee the maintenance was done and it was done on schedule and was done professionally.

A one owner private owner car - could have been "backyard Bob" insisting on running 20W50 conventional oil even during winter, never changing the brake fluid etc... I wouldn't worry too much, Toyota's have a good reputation for a reason, my .02 is run a carfax or similar and just make sure it wasn't in a collision etc...

edit:
I missed the end of the thread.

55K miles on an 09 - that's high for a short length of tie but - 55K miles isn't bad, that's what I bought my 06 with

I plan to visit the dealer and have a nice long friendly chat and get a written detailed history on the car and take it from there. Unfortunately some times the car my be fine but the place or people selling it don't inspire confidance or trust and I walk away.

once you buy it, you will love it and you will want to drive it more
that's how you get the high miles

We used to baby our cars, try not to put too many miles but the new approach for us is to drive it to the ground, put as many miles as possible to get the most out of our $$

So go for it!

I bought my CPO 2008 Touring model in Sep 2009. It was a rental car with 42K miles at that time. 18 months and 16K miles has gone by and NOT a single problem so far other than the couples recalls last year.

The only things that been done are changing to Mobil 1, brake fuild flush, coolant flush, power steering fluid flush, new air filter and new cabin filter.
When it hit 60K miles, it will get another Mobil 1 and Transmission fluid flush.
