Program Key Type Remote

I'm the next owner of a 2008 Avalon XLS.
The dealer assured me had both remotes.
Only one...but he ordered a replacement and has shipped me an un-cut key.

Most of the posts here address the Keyless remotes.

Can the Key-Type remote be programmed WITHOUT going to a Toyota dealer?

This forum has already helped solve a couble of bugs.
But I really need help on programming a key-type remote.

Did you google search for a programming sequence? My son just got a used 05 Camry and we had to get another remote for him. We found a sequence online that was something like: open door/hit brake pedal 3 times/close door/put key in ignition/turn on then off/reopen door/press remote unlock within 5 seconds/etc/etc.

It was goofy but it worked perfectly to program the new (to him...it was used) remote.

Good luck.

The link you referenced states the following disclaimer in the heading:

This procedure is for 2008 Avalon models that have a seperate key and remote.
If you have a Smart Key you will have to have a Locksmith or Dealership
program it for you.

I'm not exactly sure about terminolgy here, but my functioning key is a real key, with a four button head. It is one-piece. Not a seperate key and fob (keyless ignition). Based on the above statement, I assume I have a "Smart Key".

My key also has a very small dimple located at the base of the key, on the key shank itself, just below where the black plastic housing meets thre key. The guy behind the Toyota Parts counter said this identifies the key as having the Engine Immobilaer feature. Other keys can be programmed to unlock the doors, and cut to roll in the ignition tumblers....but it will NEVER start the car.

The dealership wants $252 for the key, plus $97 to Program it.

There HAS to be cheaper alternative.

Anyone else have a suggestion?

Programming the remote to the doors went flawlessly.

Unfortunately, the key won't start the car.
Immobilizer feature restricts use UNLESS you take the correct key to the dealership. They are the only ones who can match the key to the car via the ECM.

$350 will correct it all...

No, you don't have SMART KEY. Smart Key ONLY comes with LIMITED which works with push start/stop to turn the car, engine on. As for your remote, your dealer seems to ask for a lot. I heard most of the time if you buy the key from them, they will program it for nothing. Are you new customer from that dealership? Better ask around.
