Dome Light Drama

The rocker switch for the dome light on my 05 XLS broke (I work nights and pass through US Border Patrol checkpoint every night) from frequent use. Its really a cheesy mount. I go to the dealer and they say its only available as a whole assembly with sunroof switch sunglass compartment etc. and costs $843. Anyone know an easy fix or where I can find a used assembly? I checked Ebay and a few wrecking yards with no luck.

Thanks,
Sam/stc315

$843 is the list price if you have the factory Navigation system (the voice activation microphone is part of the assembly). The non-nav version is cheaper, though still exorbitant. Check toyota-parts.com for mail order discount pricing (look under roof . . . interior trim).

I would peer into the more pedestrian models (like Sienna, Corolla, Camry) at you dealer to see if any use a similar switch. The map light ass'y for those vehicles is more like $100 and perhaps the switch could be scavenged (likely it has to be unsoldered from a printed circuit board) and used to replace yours. You might have to settle for a color that is slightly different.

Those are actually really great ideas. Much better than my idea of putting in a toggle switch.

Some sort of ordinary 3 position (center off) SPDT toggle switch remains a viable backup. Here is Toyota's recommendation for how to remove the assembly:

Using an "L" shaped plastic trim tool, pry between the assembly and headliner along the edge nearest the windshield (I use a set purchased from Harbor Frieight - http://www.harborfreight.com/4-piece...kit-95214.html ).

There are 2 blind retainer clips above the sunglass storage cavity that retain it to a bracket in the roof. Once the windsheld-end of the assembly is moved inward 1/4"-or-so, slide it toward the windshield and the other edge will release for removal.
Unplug the connectors.

Thanks for that, I looked at non-nav one and it's only $195. I might be able to swap out the broken rocker switch bracket or transplant the mic over to the new unit. I will have to find some pics of the non-nav unit to compare.
