OBDII and Recalls

I have a 2005 Avalon and the check engine light came on today. I've pulled codes using and Actron reader on this car. Now, the car doesn't communicate with the reader. Hmmm.......

I've had the recalls done on the car. The brake recall was recently done. Does anyone know if there is a software upgrade on the brake recall? I'm wondering if Toyota pulled a stunt and disabled OBDII so it now requires a proprietary tool to pull codes. I thought ODBII was standard so they had to comply but it wouldn't surprise me if Toyota pulled a stunt to force dealer service.

Thanks for any help.

Assuming your car got all the brake-related recall work done - yes, there was a reflash to install the brake override. But before you get wrapped around the axel thinking Toyota has sabbotaged you, wouldn't it be a good idea to diagnose it first?

Er.....ah, isn't that what the code reader process does? Car exhibits no problems. Runs fine. Kind of hard to diagnose a problem with no symptoms. Enter the code reader to help you out....when it works.

BTW, the coder reader works fine on my Suburban.

i just have the brake recall done yesterday and the invoice showed something about software flash. So I assumed there is a software update.

As for the brake recall, I really have no idea what they did. Did they replace the brake fluid cap?

What I meant was to ensure there's not an issue with the code reader, its cable or the comm port (bent or pushed pins) that might be the cause of the communications issues.

According to Actron, the '05 Avalon is CAN and not OBDII. That being the case, the code reader I have won't work. It worked before but it won't work now. Actron says I was just lucky and the flash update likely changed something casuing it to stop working. Regardless, I need a new code reader for this car and evidently anything newer than a 2004.
