lower engine knock 07

Hard knocking noise related to rpm sounds like diesel truck pulled along side. Not lifter click type noise. Audible at idle from 15 ft. Dealer unimpressed said try lucas. I did no change. get oil/filter done at dealer

07 knock

Really don't think it's exhaust. Putting a stethpscope on lower part of engine the noise is very loud and sounds internal and mechanical. It's been there for 20,000 miles and hasn't changed. Just annoying and embarrassing. Really sounds like a diesel. Runs fine. 70,000 miles on her.

Mine has done that since i got her, about 45,000 miles ago. I think it's just the Avalon sound. I haven't had any problems.

knock 07

good to know I'm not alone. Did the dealer look at it and have thoughts? Most of the Avalon's I've come across have engines where you can't tell if it's running or not as they're so quiet. I agree the car runs fine. Just waiting for "the other shoe to drop."

i think it is a common 3.5 engine knocking noise. If you search around any Lexus/toyota with 3.5, engine noise compliant pops up everywhere.

our 05 and 06 both have the same noise, just one is louder then the other and I got used to it

I have the same issue - it is just annoying and somewhat embarrasing for sure especially when cold(er). Mine never really goes away when hot.

I wonder if the engine's knock sensor perceived the knock as a knock and is constantly retarding the timing? Thus lower fuel economy.

Has anyone tried a different grade or type of oil - ie: synthetic, lighter, heavier, etc.?

It would be nice if a Toyota tech was on here and could chime in on this.

if it sound like a diesel truck, something wrong. sound like you either have a rod knock or piston slap. is it getting louder as your rpm is rising? does it go away when its warm? hows the cool start?

It never goes away. Really the same hot or cold and seems to increase with rpm though it doesn't get louder. Putting the stethoscope on the block right side below O2 sensor (2GH) stamped on block it's loudest andsounds like it's right there. Lucas made no difference and because of the noise I always have "them" change the oil so it won't come back on me. After 1st posting #6 coil went bad. It's in front so someone is looking out for me. Thanks

I don't think mine sounds like a diesel, but rather like heavy valve tap (multiple valves, not just one). It seems like the valves need adjustment. It sounds like a valvetrain that is starving for oil, but sounds like it all the time.

I did take it to the dealer to have it evaluated and they said that "some of these make this noise and some are louder than others, but it is normal". My definition of normal must be different than theirs.

At any rate, I can't imagine it is in the lower end since I am pretty sure mine would have come apart by now - redline runs multiple times a day to keep the carbon blown out.

I have heard or read that it could be piston slap - could be that (which is lower end, but not bearing related)

Mine is pretty loud when pulling out of the neighborhood in the morning or after starting when cold - it does indeed get somewhat quieter, but still definitely louder than any other vehicle I have ever owned - sad.

If anyone stumbles upon any info by talking to service techs or otherwise something we would not have access too that pertains to this, please share.

Metal hitting metal and making a knocking sound isn't normal. Eventually something has to give. I checked an 06 and 2 2010's for this knock sound and none had it.

Thanks for the feedback. Are you a Toyota tech or SA or do you have a shop? I ask wondering if you have access to the official Toyota TSB library. A friend of mine has his own import shop (mainly Honda) and in about 5 seconds pulled up a few TSBs for this car that had to do with the valvetrain - camshaft subassembly IIRC. Anyway, I plan to head back over and check his thoughts.

I will provide whatever info and feedback I can. Sounds like several of us are experiencing and describing the same/similar things.

Lots of complaints from Lexus es350 owners with this engine/youtube

Here is a link to the thread ...... dealer tells everyone it's "normal"

Lots of youtube videos in the club lexus forum all of which describe it as diesel sound.
