Quiet tires for '06 Avalon

In early 2010 - replaced factory-provided Bridgestone RE-92s with Sears Bridgestone HP550 on an '06 Avalon XL.

Gas mileage fell off but the tires handed well and were quite....in the beginning.

After 40,000 miles - tread still looks brand new and tires are now very noisy. The minimal tread wear suggests a high mileage tire which they were advertised as by the Sears employee I dealt with. That could explain the noise. Not saying all high mileage tires are nosiy - but these certainly are.

I could simply go back to the OE Bridgestone RE-92s.

Looking for opinions on other makes/styles of tires that are quite on the later gen Avalons. Not concerned with tire life - just a quite ride.

Environment - warm - winter non-existent as is rain. Driving syle - 60 miles round trip daily - mostly highway.

Thanks for your time.

Mike - I recently put the third set of tires on my '07. The requirements, in order of preference, were:
  • Quiet
  • Comfort
  • Wet weather handling
The previous two sets of tires were Michelin's Michelin - Energy™ MXV4 S8 (they were OEM on the car).

I did all the online research I could at the usual tire websites. I knew the best price and customer service was going to be through Costco and they just happened to have the two tires I was interested in, the:
  • Michelin - Energy™ MXV4® S8
  • Bridgestone - Turanza with Serenity Technology
Costco was offering a $70 rebate for a set of four Bridgestones so I headed off to buy them and get them installed. As I talked with the guy at Costco I mentioned that I was considering those two tires and had decided on the Bridgestones, he (reluctantly) told me that I might be better off with the Michelins because of how much quieter and smoother they were, albeit they were more expensive. I hadn't told him what my selection criteria were but he just nailed what was important to me.

As I drove home on my third set of Michelins it didn't take me long to reaffirm I had made the right choice.

A few other things about the Michelins you might be interested in are that I get 32-33mpg on the highway on a regular basis (120-mile roundtrip commute), the car is whisper quiet (no tire tread noise that I can hear), the car handles very well for a softly-sprung car, and the tires have lasted me 55,000 miles per set.

Go Michelins!

'05 Avalon running Continental DWS -100 highway mi/day
10K on tread - probably get 30K which is decent here in NE PA/Upstate NY
Great wet/dry traction/handling, quiet on asphalt, but louder on concrete.
Good light snow traction - especially lateral.
Sidewall is very soft, but does not seem to affect overall handling.
Ride is compliant, but not at all stiff.
For $120 each they seem hard to beat at this point for an AS tire.
Was tempted to go with Michelin, but past experience with many types of vehicles has been that snow/ice braking is terrible once the tread is at ~40% remaining.
Anyone tried the Hydro-edge or GoodYear Tripletred?

I just got my 2007 Avalon, but the guy who convinced me to get the car has a 2006 Touring with 134K miles and is on his third set of tires. He burnt up the OEM Michilens after 35K and decided to try the hydro-edge for the second set. He wasn't overly impressed as they feathered quickly and seemed to wear oddly. The current set is Michilen Primacy MXV4 (620 UTQG) and with about 25k on this set are still extremely quiet and tread still looks to be doing very well. I am actually looking to go with these as the dealer installed some coopers that ride ok, but are not as quiet as I would like. Anyone looked into the low-rolling resistance Michilens?

I have an 08 Camry and I replaced the factory Michelin MXV4 with the Primacy and could not be happier. I liked to old Michelins but the treadwear was not where I thoght it should be. I rotated every 5k and still only got 38k. The primacys are super qiuet and hadle well. they are a little more money but money well spent. I got mine at discount tire and negotiated them down in price. I have not heard good things about the turanzas. BTW I have about 12k on the primacys and would not give them up. Keith

I have the Turanzas on my 2010 Avy. They ride alright, and I don't have any problem with them besides the tread wear. The car has 30k mi on it, and the tread was so much lower than my 06 corolla with Michelin X-Radials. I noticed that Tire-Rack and Consumer Reports both rated the Primacy as the best for our class of vehicle. I am hoping to get a set of those installed around Christmas since the tread on my Turanzas probably won't last through the rougher winter months.

The ones I wrote about above are low-rolling resistance.

Thought there might be issues with feathering and odd treadwear patterns on the Hydro-edge - have seen this on other directional AS tires. If you are looking for all-season you may want to check Nokian SUV or GR2's.

Have this set of Hakka LT's on a 4X4 I use for winter/plowing and they are just as impressive -

They are expensive and wear is average (no scalloping that I observed), but I have never had any other tire come close in AS performance. They stick like glue even on wet ice and the snow traction is top-notch. Great ride, quiet and good braking. I did not put them on my Avalon as I was just trying to save a few $$ and Conti/General has a good rep.
Just put Conti Ecoplus low-rollers on a '99 Buick Park Ave to see how they work - will update.

Thanks to all.

May eventually give the Primacy a shot - local Costco sells for a reasonable fee.

I've seen excellent results with the Goodyear Assurance Comfortread Touring. They are an 80k tire. Nice and quiet and rated VERY well. I've sold them to many customers and I've never heard anything bad about them from any of them. So far they've all been very satisfied.

A good tire to consider.....

I had a set of KUMHO Solus KH16 Grand Touring All-Season tires on my 2004 GS300. They are extremely quite tires with great road manners, and for the price they are very hard to beat! I'm about the change tires on my Avalon and I will be going back to the KH16 from KUMHO.
