Anyone have a solution to this problem. I have 07 limited w smartkey. If I walk away from the car after driving it and don't lock it either using the fob or the door button, when I go to open the door again it is unlocked but the alarm is armed so it goes off. It's very annoying that the alarm arms automatically but the doors don't lock automatically. This means anyone can get into the car if I don't lock it manually. I can't find anything in the manual regarding this.
I am not sure if it will AUTO LOCK if you just walk away with your smart key. That's the reason I think they have the button on all door handles (for locking, "manully")
actually I like it that way.
I parked my car in the garage and often, I need to move car seat back and forth between cars or put stuffs in for the next day. We don't lock our car at all inside the garage so if it AUTO lock, it means I have to "carry" the key to the garage everytime.
The doors of my 2005 Limited do lock automatically if I walk away without securing the car. The time delay is around 10 minutes. The service rep tells me that's the way it works.
I figured they all did that.

My '07 Limited does not lock automatically when I exit the car, nor would I want it to. What it does do, however, is relock if I unlock the door and then don't open it with a period of time (1-minute?).
You didn't say whether the alarm is a factory or aftermarket. If it's factory - go talk to a dealer service adviser because what you're describing doesn't sound right. The alarm shouldn't auto-arm without the doors locking.

"Passive Mode" is a setting available to program. It will arm the alarm 30 seconds after the driver door is closed after the car is shut off regardless of door lock status. Its default factory setting was OFF. Someone asked to have it set to on. Call the dealer and have them use their scantool to shut it off.

I don't see this as a customer customization option. My 07 does not do this. I leave it unlocked in the garage when I get home from work, and it is not locked when I leave in the morning.

Thx for all the replies. Yes it's the factory alarm. I'm the second owner. I bought her last july with about 40k miles on her. Next time I go to the dealer, I'll ask about turning passive mode off. It's really annoying. Example... I get out of car to go pump gas, when done and go to get back in, the door is unlocked but the alarm goes off, then I have to fish thru my pockets for the smartkey to disarm, real PITA. Love the car otherwise.

sorry, I misunderstood your problem earlier. Now this gas station example makes sense. I think most of us don't have this issue so somehow your setting (whatever it is) was different.
I didn't know Avalon has alarm, not sure how it works
