I'm going with synthetic Mobil1 oil..like I use on my Camry...I also use the Mobil 1 oil filter. My problem is that the Mobil1 filter that fits the Avalon is really hard to find. Anyone else have this issue?
Why Mobil1 filter?...I intend to run 10,000 miles between oil changes and I assume the Mobil 1 filter is built for this. The Toyota filter is designed for the Avalon, but also designed to be changed every 5000 miles. If I'm wrong about this...any advice would be welcome.
Why do you assume the Mobil filter is built for 10,000 miles and why do you want to go 10,000 miles between oil changes? Do you have any warranty in effect or are you over 100,000 miles? I certainly think the Mobil 1 oil is capable of 10,000 miles but is the filter capable?

That is a dangerous assumption. I would hope you have facts to back it up.....
one thing to keep in mind, The Toyota Filter has more surface area then the Mobil1 filter does.

Even with 10K coverage, but the cost is higher. Only make sense if it has better quality over OEM which I am not sure.
Best way is to have a new one cut in cross section to compare. I once saw a cut out of OEM vs the orange brand filter and the OEM is much better quality. Mobil 1, I don't know since I took my car to dealer for oil chance

Well, the Toyota filter I'm sure is a great filter...but the mobil 1 is made out of synthetic fibers, the Toyota is made out of cellulose...I'm told. The TRD filter made for the Avalon would be a good option, but my local dealer does not carry it. Back to the M1 filter; it says on their web sight that the filter is designed for high milage use. But, as always, I'm open to a better education. After all, it will only benifit the Avalon.
Wow. $18 for an oil filter (cellulose or otherwise) is a lot of money. Add to that the cost of Mobil 1 (or any other pure synthetic oil) and that's one very expensive oil change - even if it's extended to 10k miles. I'd venture a guess that an oil change with Mobil 1 with a Mobil 1 filter costs more than twice the cost of a conventional filter and dino-oil or even semi synthetic - even after factoring in the extended oil change intervals.
I just can't justify that unneeded expense for things that are above the factory recommended specifications. While I don't know for certain - I'm confident that Toyota wouldn't specify a cellulose filter if it isn't capable of doing the job it's intended to do.
After 40+ years of car ownership I've yet to have an engine fail by using standard (and budget) brand oil filters. For me - that's good enough.

I'm sure you know Mobil oil does not make oil filters, so the 10,000 miles filter change isn't a good idea. I've torn down dozens of engines working at a friend's import shop. Too many engines using cheap filters, (i.e. Fram, STP) and using cheap oil. I know synthetic is much better, I prefer Royal Purple, but I change the filter at 5,000 miles and then top off with a product called BG MOA (BG Industires) until the next 5000 miles. I purchased a box of Toyota filters at got them at about $3.50 each. Call Chad at Power Toyota @1-800-556-4188.
