Avalon owners-Do you enjoy the OEM Nav?

Hello,

I just purchased a 2008 Avalon XLS and have the opportunity to purchase an OEM nav unit. Just looking for a few thoughts on the unit and how it works for you guys. Thanks ahead of time for any info!

Cheers,

Mike

Dont even think about wasting your money. Not only would it be a b*tch to retrofit, its a junky system.

Does indirect enjoyment count?
I do find it enjoyable to imagine ripping the ill-conceived piece of junk out of the dash and tossing it under an asphalt roller. Or perhaps having the opportunity to fire the incompetent engineer who designed it.

Don't bother. For the money you'd be better off getting an Android smartphone and using its built in navigation application - and with that you get constant map updates.

I Can Honestly Say I Like It...So Nice I Got It Twice...But What Made Me Like It Was Switching From a 06 To a 08 And Seeing The Differences To Where They Made The Controls Easy To Use....I Do A lot Of Traveling And Not Good With Directions..So It Does Get Me To Where I Don't Know How To Go...Not To Mention This Is My First Car So I Don't Have Much Comparison except For My Droid Phone

Lower your expectation and you "maybe" OK.

I LOVE the NAV not because of it's NAV function, it's because of the screen display, like the climate control or radio screen (which showed most of the name and songs on radio stations).

Even the MAP display looks ok. The problem with the NAV system is it's routing and interface, both are terrible. 100% user UNFriendly!! Don't expect you can do a real time route because it can't. You better have all your destinations planned and saved on the system.

Unlike probably GPS, your routing option is limited to 1) house number, then 2) street name, you can't input zip code or city 1st (no such options). As Tom in Tacoma mentioned, most Smartphone will out perform TOYOTA NAV BIG time. I used my iPhone, much faster, just lack of voice.

For me, I will still pick the one with NAV for better display

I have a 2008 Avalon with the factory nav. That is the most worthless piece of CRAP that I have ever seen. As I have said before, for better use of the $2000, the next 40 times you take a crap, wipe with at fifty dollar bill. You will get better use of your money!

Unhappy

There IS something worse than factory NAV, that's factory REMOTE START. The factory NAV unit is outperformed by a $100 TomTom all day long.

My Avalon has the factory Remote start and I only tried it once to confirm it works. We don't use that feature since we park it in the garage. It probably work better for folks in the cold region.

The range is worthless on an oem remote start.
