3rd Generation Poor Gas Mileage

I have a 2007 Avalon with 34,000 miles on it. I'm only getting 23 mpg on the highway. Is there anyone else out there with this problem?

Here are two past threads that discuss mileage issues, including poor highway mileage:

2008 Avalon - Lower MPG Than Expected

Fuel Mileage Tips and Tricks

If those don't have enough information you can always use the forum's search feature to locate other threads, and I'd recommend using "mileage" as your only search term.

23 mpg does seem low for trip mileage. You would expect that in heavy city driving. My experience on long trips (depending upon the mix of city traffic and time of year) you get at least in the 28s or 29s overall with some 30s thrown in for individual tanks of gas. I see you're in Texas so the last time I went to Dallas from Arkansas I got 30.5 overall which is about a 700 mile round trip for me but a lot of that is on I-30. Also, my last tank of gas I got 25.7 mpg and that was just driving around my home county. Last month we went to northern Illinois for a 1,400 mile plus trip and got 31.1, 28.6, 29.7, and 29.2 mpg. Did you always get that kind of mileage? If not, maybe you should get the car checked out. I get my injectors cleaned every so often but I assume there are other things that can be looked at.

Check your air filter for starters.

Toyota's recommended 29 psi tire pressure will not yield the best gas milegae. I run mine at 35 psi.

Last but not least - are you lead-footed?

I do the same thing with much improved results.

#1 cause of poor mileage, IMO.

The air filter is a good suggestion; also using 0W-30 synthetic might help a little and I see where 0W-40 is starting to become available. I'm surprised at the 29 psi you mentioned. The sticker on my '08 says 32 psi and I run them at 35 psi as you do. And, it's easy to be lead footed with the Avalon. Gas mileage is a lot of little things put together that add up.

29psi? I think is around 30 and 32.

XL has 16 inches tires. XLS and Limited are 17's, hence the different pressures.

I run my 17s at 35psi. I did an 856 mile round trip this weekend for the 4th of July Holiday including several stops. I averaged 30.9 MPG and generally cruised from 75 to 80mph. 23mpg is way too low.

I also commute with a bit of a lead foot 90 miles a day, and on those trips I generally average 27-28mpg. I was being somewhat more leisurely on my long trip.
