First Gear Whiplash

My 2005 misbehaves when slowing to 1st gear speed on a slight decline then accelerating. It will reeve up until 1st gear catches up with the vehicle speed with a sudden whiplash, before shifting to 2nd. The tech said it was operating normally. My neighbors Tundra does the same thing. Anyone else experiencing this?

Yeah, all Toyotas do that, even Lexus. You just have to learn to ease the throttle until the transmission catches the gear again. I'm so used to that with both cars I can feel when its going to happen so I go easy on the throttle.

Yes, Toyota's shift logic leaves MUCH to be desired

Our 07 Highlander does that too and I hate it. Now a day all the electric control, drive by wire... give me a break (especially Toyota, they are just not as smooth as others). Back then on my 97 Camry, I like the old school method, step on it and it goes, no delay on shift.

I wonder if we can disconnect the battery and have the tranny "relearn" our driving habit?

That probably won't help, but you can get an aftermarket throttle controller, it adjusts sensitivity and responsiveness. Seach Pivot Throttle Controller on TN.
Nissan did an excellent job with the dbw, you don't even notice the difference.
