Interested in buying a 3rd gen Avalon

I'm looking to purchase one but not sure which model. I really like the limited model, but I have heard from the various car audio forums that the JBL Synthesis isn't really that great so now I'm looking to purchase a non limited model to save a bunch of money and I will do a custom audio installing myself. From my understanding the limited model also has heated seats and a rear window shade (both of which are nice but I really don't need to pay several thousand dollars extra for such features.

So, what else is the difference between all of the models? I know the 2011+ got a 6 speed transmission and a refresh. I could care less what the outside body looks like. Is the 2011 model quieter inside or does it have a smoother ride? Basically I'd like to know what changes were made with each year. I would also like to buy one that already has HIDs, although I could retrofit ones but that is a lot of work (have done it before on a different vehicle).

For example, prior to the 2011 model, what were the differences between the XLS and Limited and XL models? I am surprised how much these cars drop in value (good for those who are looking to buy a used model). New Limited models are close to $40,000, I've seen dozens on autotrader from $16,000 to $23,000 with less than 75,000 miles on them and roughly 5 years old!

I believe the limiteds are the only model to get HIDs. You could retrofit but on the 05-10 it would be hard since they arent projectors. I would just wait until they announce the true next gen avy. not some redesign.

I'd suggest using Google. Search "2008 Avalon Brochure", "2009 Avalon Brochure", etc. and print out the eBrochures for each year. The brochures show standard features and options for each trim level and comparisons would be easy.

It wouldn't be a bad idea to have the brochures with you when you look at potential cars to determine which option packages the car came with, what to look for, etc.

The touring model has HID's, but loses the cooled seats, keyless go, and a whole host of other features. I consider myself to be somewhat of an audiophile, for an OEM system, the JBL is very good. I've replaced the stereo in every car I've ever owned, except the avalon. It does a good enough job that I'm not convinced to spend money to upgrade it.

Edmunds.com sketches the evolutionary changes from year to year. The detail isn't great but you might like to look here

I'd agree that the JBL system in the Limited is a worthwhile option. It compares favorably with the aftermarket systems I've purchased over the years, and the integration of the controls is nicely done.

The Avalon Limited has features other than the heated (an cooled) seats and a rear window shade to recommend it. Live with one for a few days and the little luxuries, the grace notes as it were, become addictive. I'm willing to pay a little more to enhance a car I will drive for years.

Good luck with your choice.
