If you look at his trip time, it says 5 seconds. He did the old reset at speed and lift.
If I reset it on a downward grade on the freeway, I can get all kinds of silly numbers... especially if I lift off of the throttle.
It always ends up back at about 17.5 combined driving though.
Okay, gotcha. I always buy the base model of vehicles and have never had a trip computer like that.
Your example of downhill numbers reminds me of the last time I drove down the Cajon Pass with family. The pass is steep enough so that with my foot off the gas I'm moving at 80 MPH for about five miles in my Highlander, and the last time I drove through there I declared, "Hey, I'm getting about a hundred miles per gallon right now!"

Hello!
There is not the 5 srconds it's 4 and 5 minute. The interval 1 minute. And there is no downhill, may be a little. I don't do any tricks.
Ok, then tell us what the fill-up numbers were for the trip that the snapshot is from. How many miles? How many gallons to refill? I'm not interested in 5 minute snippets.
It's starts with 10 plus MPG. This results I have only in one GAs Station. In other I don't have higher than the 30-32 MPG. In the first time I think that is my comp has problems, but each time I fill the gas the results near this numbers. But then, after the gastank down half. The number near the 25-27 MPG. I don't know what is! May be it's truly my comp has some problems. I only wish to share my results. If You don't believe me it's Your choice!
If it is like my 2006, the car computes average mpg since the last time you added gas. That is why you are getting better numbers at first and then over a whole tank, you settle out at 25 - 27 (which is also what my '06 averages).
Just an observation:
Based on the data on your console it looks like the computer is reading something wrong. The initial numbers right after a fillup can sometimes be deceptive.
1. Your gas gauge shows that you topped off the gas tank. (Not recomended)
2. Your range is 254 miles. (This is derived from your mpg x how much gas in tank)
3. The gas tank capacity is 16 gals.
4. 254/16 = 15.8 mpg
5. The numbers don't add up
It looks great tho. It gives you bragging rights. U da man!
I have 2005 XLS and the best I have seen, and I squeezed it, is 34.6
I have found the estimated Fuel Range (miles left to empty) on my Avalon to be a complete waste of my time. I have dug around a bit on this board and found similar complaints.
As for the high numbers posted in the pic... I would say it's a faulty computer, regardless of the fueling station... something is awry.
