2007 Avalon Code P0456

Check engine and VSC lights came on wife's car, took to dealer, they hooked up computer and now stating that the Evap system has a leak. They want to replace the Charcoal Canister and they are quoting $900.00.

They state part is approx $300 and the rest is labor due to location. This seams awfully expensive. Anyone else experience this, is there other things I should have them look for? Any help would be great, not in a great financial position right now.

Since you seem to have doubts about both their competence and their integrity, why don't you get a second opinion from a shop you trust? Evap leaks could have many sources including some with small simple fixes. It's tough for anyone to do a remote diagnosis, and if the canister is leaking it could have been struck by a road hazard, a unique situation.

Read what's posted at the URL above - entirely possible it's simply the ole gas cap thing.

Take it to Auto Zone or other mass-marketer parts place where they read CEL codes for free.

Get a 2nd opinion.

The dealer you went to stands to line his pocket for what might be a 5 min fix. He could claim the $900 repair was made and unless you know how to check for it - would never know if it had or not. For $900 you might drive off with nothing more than a new gas cap and code erased via scanner.

I have this same error on my '08. I replaced the gas cap @$15 but the warning light came back on so I will probably have to bite the bullet and get the canister replaced.

My biggest annoyance is that the VSC and traction control lights come on because of a check engine light. If the VSC light is on, the VSC system is disabled.

One of my cars safety systems is disabled due to an unrelated problem in the emissions system. I just hope the airbags will still work if my check engine light is on

Did you clear the code after replacing the cap?

Yes. A couple of days later the code came back on.

I have a code reader so it is easy for me to clear the code. Sometimes I can go up to a week without the light coming back on, other times it is the next time I start the engine.
