OK TN members I need ask for some advise. I have a way to add an OEM nav system to my 06 touring, and my question is should I retro fit the OEM nav or should I use a aftermarket in dash navigation system
For the owners of OEM navigation equipped cars, what do you like or dislike about your OEM nav
well i dont know what your dash looks like. but to me it matters what the dash looks like. as we know that new cars have a unit with bug buttons and odd shapes and most of the time the aftermarket will not fit or look correct in new cars. but if you have an older looking dash like a simply double din or single din then go for after market! i got the clarion nx500 for my rav4 and i went with that over the oem unit because i much rather have a actual unit i can use unlike the oem. the oem has flaws such as slow response time, updating of maps and little things like that. but if you just want a clean look and arent actually going to make full use of the dash then go with oem. but like i said; it matters how your dash looks. new style only really looks good with the oem unit whereas the old style can be good with aftermarket!

My Avalon was purchased new with the OEM nav, but I use an aftermarket one instead. That should tell you all you need to know. The OEM nav looks nice and has a big screen, but is worthless for actual navigation. For the price the dealer charges to update the maps (now more than 5 years out-of-date), I could buy 4 decent aftermarket navs, and everyone in the car could have their own display.

I agree. The OEM nav is a worthless piece of trash. The only thing nice is the display, which I use for a backup camera. I use my android phone with google nav. All I have to do is speak to it, tell it where I want to go and I'm done. No fiddling with the shit joystick, terrible address entry, and worthlessly outdated maps of the OEM trash.

I Actually Bought The Nav Twice..I Use My Droid More Than The OEM,I Picked it Because Im Bad With Directions And My Job Has Me All Over The Place....So If My Phone Dies And I Cant Charge It,I Have Back Up.
The OEM Takes You The Long Way Or The Wrong Way...The 08 is More improved Than The 06,But Not Much...Safe To Say I Wouldnt Get It A Third Time
in terms of factory NAV, we had/have 2 limited both have NAV. Agree 100% the NAV sucks! However, I like it as a display for MAP, climate control, radio info, other stuff... BUT Boy, the routing feature is hard to use. We used it for a few times only.
Now my question to u is how are you going to add the OEM to your current car? Don't you have to change the display? and the center console control? add DVD box in the trunk? Maybe you already have those layout. Otherwise, aftermarket maybe more easier in term of installation

Yes I would change the info screen over to a nav screen. I have someone that can sell me all the hard parts that are needed, and then he can make a custom wire harness to plug it all up using OEM plugs.
Now after this feed back from the other members is just what I expected, that the OEM nav is worthless. I like others just like the look of the OEM navigation but that is about it.
I've picked up an extra radio console I will be modifying it to accept a double din navigation unit. I will retain the folding cover so when not in use I can hide the new double din. I'll keep everyone posted on my progress.
As I have said on here before. The OEM nav is a totally worthless waste of $2000. If the next 40 times you take a dump, wipe with a $50 dollar bill. You will get more use out of your money !
I just purchased a 2010 limited and can attest that still the nav is crap. My 300$ Garmin is better and gets more use than the Toyota dvd driven useless nav system. I do like the map and it helps my poor eyes find streets better when not using the Garmin. But I can't stand the user interface and refuse to use it for navigational purposes.
I had the dealer throw in the latest nav disc and will insert it tomorrow and see if there is any changes from the stock 8.1 version I have in there now. I am not hopeful...
