05 Avalon Fuel Recommendation

I beleive the octane fuel recommendation is 93 octane. Is this correct? Also would you be able to get away running mid-grade and have no problems with preformance?

Try mid grade if it runs shitty (knocks) then put premo in it. I find it ironic that someone would have 30K+ to drop on a new Avy and wouldn't want to spend the extra $200-300/yr to run premium in it??? Heck with regular you might only get 260 hp instead of 280

Jimmy,

My owners handbook says 87 octane recommeneded, and that you may get better performance with 91.

Yep. It's been the same since at least the 2000 model year.

Left unsaid is that you can get by with lesser octane at higher altitudes. So for you folks in Denver or higher up in the Rockies, just buy mid-grade and don't worry about the octane rating.

I've ran mid-grade in my Y2K Avalon for over 93,000 miles, with great performance and no knocking. Even in Denver or higher elevations. I haven't tried to run it on "regular, unleaded" but supposedly the knock sensor would lower the power a smidgen and still not knock.

That's correct, 91 octane is recommended so you can get all 280 horses running. Lesser octane won't hurt the engine, but that'll mean fewer horses...

We go with the 93. Our 1994 V-6, 2dr Camry always dropped mileage and knocked when we put anything else in it....

I do like all 280 of the horses, I want to feed them well!!!

Now that the outside temperatures are getting warmer have you noticed any engine knock or indication that 87 octane is not a good choice? Are you still using the 87?

93 Octane. Damn that'll drain my wallet like nothing!

My friend once put 96 OCtane in his Evo. Crazy rich ass punk.

But yeah. All I-4 Toyota engines requires 87 Octane. All the V6s requires 91 Octane.

if you really think about it...it's only a couple cents if not a dollar more each time you pump gas to get premium

You are correct. In my area the spread between regular and premium is .20 which amounts to something like $3.20 per week for me. The money is not the issue nor is my concern for a few more ponies. It's kinda like using regular motor oil vs. a full synthetic. Ya the car might run a tiny bit better but if I don't really need it I don't want to buy it. So, I'm thankful that Toyota uses such a good computer system that will adjust to the full spectrum of available fuel.

Around this area, 87 goes for $1.88, 93 goes for $2.39!!!!!! That adds up when you use 1-2 tanks a week.

Nevada use to have low fuel taxes but about two years ago the politicians permitted local governments to add to the fuel tax. Today in Carson City the cheapest was $2.16 at a station I've never heard of while ARCO was at $2.18. Chevron, Shell and 76 Union were all around $2.39. All prices were for 87 octane.
