I noticed that the new Avalon has a manual shift mode. I was wondering if anyone has actually tried this feature and if it really helps with getting more preformance out of this car.
I just bought a limited 2 weeks ago. I used the manual shift mode in freeway traffic. It works OK. I read somewhere that it will automatically shift up if you come near redline. I have not gone this high in the rpm range to confirm this yet, because of the new engine. I have about 500 or so miles left on the break in period until I will really push it.

lol automatic upshifting would make it totally useless it will auto downshift as you come to a stop/slow down though

Yeah. All manumatic or sport shifting cars has that feature. It won't let you overrev the car and it automatically shifts for you. When you stop, it'll automatically go down to the first gear. It does that to my Infiniti FX35.

SoCal freeways have been a good test for this engine and although I have tried the Manumatic mode, I don't really see a reason to use it unless you want to force the tranny down one gear rather than dipping into the throttle.
well i odn't know about the avalon, but on the RSX, semi-auto allows you to go a bit deeper into redline than full auto would (about 500 or so extra rpm's)
It's a Honda that's why RSX. Honda engines are known to have a high rev limit. 12k RPM on the S2000. Man, that's what I called Naturally Aspired engine to the max.

yeah, annoying at first, but u get used to it and learn exactly when to shift. I still often get one bounce in first though, just cuz it flies through the gear.
