I was happy to see that the 05 Avalon has a full size spare tire and the same rim as the other 4 on the car. When it comes to tire rotation is it wiser to use all five tires in the rotation cycle or just rotate the mounted 4 tires and only replace 4 tires when the time comes.
hmmmm....on my dad's 00, i think he said he went 70-80k without ever having rotated the tires. With taht kind of distance, i don't think u relaly need to worry about rotating them at all, lol, but i'd say to do all 5, don't want the spare tire to go bad and not realize it until u need to use it
No, that spare is for emergency only. It's not wise to put a new full tire with three already used tires. Just get the normal 4 tire rotation as always.

In the old days, it wasn't recommended to rotate radials from side to side, just front to back.
If that is still the case, then just rotate the four and leave the spare alone.
I buy two tires every 50,000 km (30,000 mi) and put these on the front, then I move the old fronts to the rear and toss the old rear tires.
It seems to work fine for me, but then I'm buying a pair every year with the mileage I drive.

They recommend a 4 tire, front to back rotation. Ours has the 6 year 100K tire replacement plan, as long as they are rotated every 5000 miles. At over $200 a tire, I'll pay them now and hopefully get at least 1 set of tires. Makes it easy, tires and oil every 5k, with free oil changes for life from my dealer, I get a deal.....
I didn't know, but some radials are now designed so the direction of rotation can be changed, meaning a 5 tire rotation using the spare is okay. See what the tire's specs are.

4 tire. No point in having a worn out spare, or always having one tire out of whack from the others. The best thing you can do for the tires is to over inflate them from the car maker's idea, and rotora the hell out of them.
New tires always on the back is the way to do it. (I promise the first person that argues with that will get a mag story, and will look like a retard!) In a fwd car that means you need to rotote them every oil change. (5000m-7500m depending on your driving) To keep them all wearing evenly.

Regular and proper tire rotation promotes more uniform wear for all of the tires on a vehicle. All season tires should be rotated in a "modified X" pattern, meaning only the tires being moved to the drive axle are crossed to the opposite side of the vehicle.
The remaining two tires are moved from the drive axle to the free rolling axle, remaining on the same side of the vehicle.
This method of rotation helps promote a more even and uniform treadwear pattern for all four tires.
The only exception to this would be the use of "directional" tread design tires such as our Aquatred II or some of our Eagle line high performance tires. These tires would remain on the same side of the vehicle and be rotated straight forward and straight back.
If you have a four-wheel drive vehicle, we recommend crossing both pairs of tires to their new axle positions. We recommend tire rotation at least every 6,000 miles. Four-wheel drive vehicles may require rotation even sooner such as every 4,000 miles. Check your vehicle owner's manual for the manufacturer's rotation recommendations. If no rotation period is specified, tires should be rotated every 6,000 to 8,000 miles. The first rotation is the most important. When tires are rotated, inflation pressures must be adjusted to the vehicle manufacturer's recommendations. Uneven tire wear may also be due to misalignment or mechanical problems. Many Goodyear retailers can provide expert diagnosis and repair."
