MPG is impressive

At the end of the first tank which was mixed city and highway I averaged 27 MPG. Filled the tank and went on a 200 mile road trip and averaged 30.7 MPG. With some cars the mileage gets better as the car breaks in, I hope this is true for the Avalone too.

I plan to run several tanks of 91 octane and record mileage then switch to the 89 octane to see if the mileage decreases. If all goes well with that I might test a tank of 87 just to see what the recorded difference is. I live at an elevation of approximately 4700 feet and have read that it is easier to run 87 octane at higher elevations. I don't know why but that is what a couple of threads indicated.

BTW, how is the NAV Trip and mileage information zeroed when the car is refueled? Is it tied to the gas door switch or is there a sensor in the tank to indicate a full tank to the NAV system?

'05,

You are fairing better than I am. My first tank (the one the dealer filled up) got 22.3, my second tank got 26.99. Both were about the same of city and highway driving.
I've only used 87 oct. The same that I used most of the time in my Volvo.
Guess I'll try the mid grade and then the 91 to check it out. I've never gotten better milage with them in the past. This car may be different, but my last two also had electronic computer directed engine controls.
Don't know about the NAV settings. Mine only has the computer. I've opened the fuel filler door and the fuel cap other than when refueling, and neither time did it reset the range to go, only when I filled up the tank. So guess it is something in the tank that senses it and resets.

Hi John, Texas gets pretty hot in the summer. Does your car ping at all with the 87 octane? My Honda Ody minivan (traded in) use to ping some in the summer even though 87 was the recommended fuel for that car. During the Fall/Winter/Spring it ran fine with no pings.

'05,

No, it hasn't pinged at all. I've only put a 'hard' load on it once or twice, but no ping. Nor did my Volvo at any time. Twice I put 'high test' (91 oct.) in the Volvo and there was no difference in the mpg. That's why I'm of the opinion that the reccommended 87 should be OK for the Avalon.
So far it hasn't been hot here, so I don't think that is a factor at this time. The highest we've had is 91 degrees, but mostly in the 70-80 range. We're not as high as you, only 1420'. and fairly flatland.

Well, just don't drive your car on a constant speed. meaning, don't drive the same speed for a long periods of time. It isnt good for the car while you're breaking it in.

how many miles do people get on a full tank of gas before the next fill up?
300-350? 350-400?

trying to find out the average miles the new avalon goes before each fill up?

from what i've read here, it is pretty impressive for a car of this size, power and the engine size.

thanks.
