Hey folks,
I was wondering if anyone knew anything about a problem with starting the 05 LTD (SmartKey)? It seems to only happen in mid/late afternoon when it is hot (it has been in the 90s-100s). It won't remote start, when I get in, I press the brake and the green LED doesn't light up, and it won't start. The electronics turn on as if the car is running, but it won't even try turning over. If I wait a bit and fiddle around enough, eventually it will start.

Any ideas?
I do not have remote start. But a few on this board do. Are you saying that you are remote starting the car and then getting in the car? I do remember something in the manual about remote starting and a shutdown feature to keep others from driving off in your car.
Curious if you got this problem fixed and the cause? Without a real key, I guess we need to stay on top of the battery life in these tiny remotes.
The owners manual indicates that if the fob battery dies that the engine will still start by holding the fob right up against the start button. Gee I wonder if PurpleDonkey was dealing with a low battery in the fob.
When you fiddle around with it, do you move the gear lever?
I think there is a switch on it, that if it is in anything other than Park, it will not turn over.
If so, there is a remote possibility that the switch is loose or adjusted slightly off and that "could' be your problem.
You may try placing the gear in other than park and see if you get the same lights as you are getting now. If so, then the elevated temp (expansion etc of the metal switch) and the switch being just slightly off may be the cause.
I've the remote starter but don't remembwer how to work it. Did it once the first day we had the car at home. I've forgotten that now, still trying to learn and remember all of the other gizmos on this car.
I still walk to the car and without thinking pull the smart key out of my pocket, then like a dummy, have to put it back. It provides a lot of laughs for my wife as I say nasty things to myself.
Just learned the other day that there are 5 stalk positions on the windshield stalk but only 4 on the rotating dial. What the hell? Rotating dial is for frequency of intermittant swipes, right?
I read the book closer---the 5 lines are for the stalk positions, the rotating knob is for automatic sensitivity. Who says an old dog can't learn new tricks, like RTFINSTRUCTIONS.

That's good to know, sounds like there is just enough juice in the battery if you hold close enough to start.
The use of the fob near the start button is not dependent on the battery. It is similar to the GM smart keys or the RFID tags on merchandise. There is no power required within the key -- an electromagnetic field from the sensor (the car side) is sufficient to read the key. The reason you need the battery is to support access from a greater distance - which is essentially "broadcast".
