05 Nav

Could you replace the DVD that comes with the NAV with another vendor's navigation DVD that's more comprehensive/accurate? Assuming you can't change the software that comes with the unit to drive the NAV system, can better data be more helpful?

Doubtful.

All you could hope is the software is not on the DVD, and the data format is some kind of popular format used by multiple systems.... Or, that the hardware (CPU, RAM, Display, Controls) is identical to the NAV system in some other systems (VERY UNLIKELY).

I know that's not the case with Infiniti, the display is a different resolution, the controls have different buttons, the system can monitor a lot of car functions like tire pressure.

If anyone has experience with the Lexus NAV system, is it basicly the same as the Avalon 05 NAV?

From what I have gathered, the Avalon '05 nav is different then even the Lexus ones since it does not have a touch screen. If you know of a Lexus that has the same one, I'd be interested.

To the original poster, I agree with the other response. The nav systems are generally not very compatible. Even within one car company, they are different enough that they cannot swap. Honda is a sort of exception in that they have the program portion of the system on the DVD for each of the systems and they share the data portion. Their data portion is a proprietary format of the same data many others use - so the data is what you need, but the format is not.

Thanks, I was hoping there may be a way out to improve the system. I'll have to play around when I get the car. Btw, as with other makes, folks have found a way to get TV. Maybe another wishful thought here...
