I love the navigation system and use it all the time. It works fine. The only problem I had is that when I'm entering a street name with more than one word (for example "Iron Bridge Rd", I can't figure out how to make a space between the words, which screws things up. I'm sure that the solution is right in front of my face in the manual, but I can't find it. If anyone knows how to do this, I'd be very grateful if you could let me know.
Also, I'm wondering why I can't find any of the photos I've posted of my pretty new car here. It seems they have been deleted. I'm a newbie, and a little confused about how to navigate this site, so I hope I haven't done anything wrong, although if I did I can't imagine what it was, lol.
I opted to go without the nav because of the entry mode. The joystick was clumsy and it took far too much time to enter information. It also felt cheap.
In retrospect, I wish I had gotten it though because I was planning on doing a screen mod (replacing the stock blue screen with an LCD with dual inputs) for video purposes, but I can't. If I had chosen the nav system, I could have.
Quick question, I have the limited with the BA stereo, can I buy an OEM nav system and replace the blue screen and tape deck with it?
Thanks again, "05 Limited", for your help with the 'space bar' thing. I really appreciate it.
The 'joystick' thing with the navigation system may seem a bit awkward at first, but now that I'm used to it, I zip right through the menus. I am very pleased with it, and don't think I'll ever be without this feature in the future, if I can help it. As for it looking or feeling cheap, I very much disagree. The dash is SO pretty. It is a bit susceptible to scratches though, so be careful what you drag across the surface of the consonsole.
When we were shopping for our 06 Avalon we wanted a backup in-dash camera screen. First thing we learned was backup cameras won't work with the normal, non-NAV screen because it's not a graphics display. We took a test drive car w/o NAV to an Al & Ed's store to see what could be fitted. When they saw the countours of the opening thay said they couldn't put anything in there that would look decent. They checked all their catalogs for aftermarket NAV systems that would fit and found nothing. Not wanting to go up a notch to the Limited, we did a special order for an XLS with NAV. Took a couple months to get.
We do not like the NAV for then same reasons many others have stated. Our portable Garmin is much easier to use. But, we have learned to live with it and would not have done anything different, given the choices.
Yes, and it works great. I bought a kit from gnetCanada.com (now http://www.navvideo.com/) for $330. It is a small electronic box and a harness the attaches to the NAV computer in the trunk. I also bought the remote, but never installed it because I didn't want to bother with string the cable from the trunk to the front seat area.
The kit does not include the camera because it is often used for other video devices, e.g., DVD players to entertain the kids or whatever. I got a good camera (SV-6300) from rocknrebates.com for $170. Cheaper ones are available, but I wanted the best.
The hardest part was installing the camera, but even that was not very difficult. I can post photos if you are interested.
