Its easier to pull the engine with the tranny.

You could unbolt the tranny from the engine and support it with a tranny jack or whatever, but goodluck getting the engine and tranny to line backup when you bolt it back together.
Actually I did it twice where I left the tranny in the car...it wasn't all that bad lining it back up again. It's a lot easier with a engine level adjuster.

I am about to pull just the tranny out of a Corolla...this should be fun!
