how to make your ae86 300lb's lighter

:P

it was a lot of work, I had to saw through part of the car and enlist the help of a mexican dude, but its finally out.

the only thing that scares me though, is that all of the coolant mixture that leaks out of various pipes is all BROWN.. i *think* its just that the coolant passages have developed some surface rust, and i'm hoping that flushing the engine out will get rid of it.. i hope its nothing more serious..

Well, it MIGHT not be rust. In fact toyotas older coolants were brownish in color.. I emptied my radiator once, man was I scared when the stuff that came out was brown, but then I flushed it, no more, and my coolants been red now, since I have had toyotas new (improved?) coolant ever since.

the problem is, we filled this exact engine with GREEN coolant prior to randy getting in the accident....GREEN to BROWN....not good at all.

randy, well at least you can get the proper gasket for the water pump now instead of that rtv crap.

i took some pics of the process, but not many.. its actually not that bad.. i guess the main thing is just disconnecting everything from the engine.. just keep unplugging stuff till there's none left haha..

if you want, shane, i can write down some of the less obvious things and send it to you

yeah, for sure its rust.. but, a guy on DK said the samething happened to his supra engine, for the same reason: just because it was sitting for awhile.. i think this happened to mine because i had disconnected certain things and let it sit outside for awhile.. so parts of the engine that were not supposed to be exposed to the elements were.. but that guy said his engine still runs fine..

but i don't think tis a huge deal, i poured fresh coolant on some of the openings, and that brown stuff washed right off (i hope its all good)

engine swap is easy.
disconnect every wire, every bolt and every line.
remove the tranny bolts and motor mounts and you pull it out. done

it's the pull-out part that I'm stuck on ... not much room in the garage and no hoist. I'm considering removing the head and dealing with the block seperately...

well you can do it the way i did it..

once you have the engine unbolted (including the engine mounts), put the cart under the cross member, with blocks of wood strategically placed on the cart that will allow the engine to hit the blocks of wood before the cross member hits the cart, as you're lowering the car..

once you lower the car enough, the engine will pop out of the mounts (due to the strategically placed blocks of wood).. then all you need to do is enlist the help of someone and drag the engine up over the cross member .. then raise the car bit by bit as you further drag the engine onto the cart..

if you use "my" method, though, you have to cut the lower rad support off the car first..

it ain't pretty, but it works..

aw man...you gotta come over to my house and see how its done. then you'll understand why randy calls it GTP (ghetto tuning project)

put it this way, you don't need a hoist and you don't need to remove the head. just some chain, a pulley and some thick ass wooden braces.

Heh, I sorta misread what you meant on your post, sorry bout that. Yeah thats the classical garage way of lifting an engine, heck I might actually use that method when I do my swap 8)
