Oil pan question?

Well today it was slow at work so I was looking at the diagrams of the 4A-GE and 4A-F and notice that the 4A-GE had an oil baffle on top of the oil pan and the 4a-F had a small oil baffle built into its oil pan. (It doesn't look very effective!) I am pretty sure the the bolt pattern for the oil pans are the same and I think the crankshaft should be the same size (Correct me if I am wrong!) and should not interfer with the 4A-GE baffle with the 4A-F crankshaft (The 4A-F crank shouldn't touch the baffle.) , so I ordered one!! It only cost me about $8 and I think the benefits of less resistance on the crank are worth it and if it doesn't fit then I can sell it on or just keep for when I decide to do my 4A-GE build!! My question is if the baffle fits properly (Which I think it should!) should I look into changing over to the 4A-GE oil pan as well to get the extra oil space? I also thought about trying to figure out some way to use the the 4A-GE oil cooler or find a nice aftermarket one. What do you guys think? Any opinions or advice would be great! Thanks!!

It fits. It does make the joint thicker where the pan joins the block. Now you have 2 layers, the lip of the oil pan and the lip of the "windage tray". On a 4afe that I am rebuilding I put a crankscraper and the windage tray (as advised by the Ishahara-Johnson people) so I have 3 layers. I don't have room for any gasket and I had to get longer bolts for the oil pan. Only a few threads hold the nuts on the two studs. I haven't run this engine yet. I hope it doesn't leak. It's interesting that the service manual for the 1990 doesn't show any gasket for either the 4afe or 4age oil pans, only the application of gasket compound. But the rebuild gasket kit included an oil pan gasket. As to whether these gadgets help in normal driving, I don't know. But I couldn't resist. I have a friend who tells me how useless crankscrapers are at normal driving RPMs, so I used one just to irritate him.

What do you think about changing to the 4A-GE oil pan for the extra oil capcity? Where did you get the crankscraper and longer bolts for the pan?

I got the crankscraper from
http://www.crank-scrapers.com/prod01.html
They were good about answering questions by email but they didn't warn me about needing the longer bolts. The crankscraper worries me a little since you after it is mounted you can slide it enough so it scrapes the crankshaft since some parts of the crankshaft have seams from when the metal was cast. I hope the bolts are going to keep it where I located it. I got the longer bolts at the local hardware store (Sutherlands). They have some fasteners in bright colored bins with plastic drawers, as do many hardware stores. I didn't think about using a 4a-ge oil pan because I don't have any 4a-ge parts lying around. I don't think it would help much in ordinary driving, but neither will the crankscraper. My guess about the function of the windage tray is that it keeps oil from going directly from lubrication duty back to the pickup tube. The 4a-ge has an oil cooler doesn't it? I don't know if the windage tray works in some way with that.

I was told the waindage tray was to keep the oil from being thrown around on the crankshaft and causing extra resistance. The oil system is pressurize so there is no need to have the crank throw extra oil around. The oil cooler doesn't have anything to do with the tray.
