Coolant leak
My '92 diesel's temp gauge went to H yesterday, that's how I discovered that I have a coolant leak. Fortunately, just 1/2 block from where I pulled over was an autoparts shop where I was able to buy coolant to top her up, and I was only 1/2 hour late for work.
There is a slow drip (about a drip every 20 second) falling from the oil pan. It is coolant, not oil. I climbed under today to try to trace it to it's source. I was hoping that it was just a hose or hose clamp issue - no such luck. The hoses are fine, the water pump seems ok. The source of the fluid seems to be in the area where the timing belt is housed - about midway down the engine block, from a seam that seems to be where the engine block meets the timing belt housing, on the left hand side of the block. The fluid runs down the seam and then along the oil pan gasket.
I don't know much about cooling systems other than they have a pump, hoses, a radiator, a thermostat, and it sends fluid about the engine to cool it. I know that the fluid must enter the block at some point. I'm just wondering if the location of the leak corresponds to where fluid should be entering the block.
It's a diesel engine, CE100 I believe is it's type number. I have no shop manual for it (suggestions where to find one?). Right now I'm suspecting a gasket. Is there any way of repairing this without lifting the engine? I'm rather handy with tools, but I don't have a shop. I will take it to a garage if that's necessary. If it isn't a gasket, what else might it be?
I'd appreciate any input from folks, even if it's not with the engine I have.
Cheers,
Paul.
