when my engine gets a lil hot, more hot than normal, i would hear something that sounds like my pistons are not lubed well, does this sound weird to you guys? i mean....seriously, thats what it sounds like, like my pistons or something is moving against very low oil or lube, but i checked my engine oil and its close to full, is this sound something i need to be worry about? my car is pretty old, a 94 with about 155,000 miles to it already, should i be using high mileage engine oil? are those any different or any good from normal engine oil (besides synthetic), thanks, i know my storys a lil long, but i had to explain it, but yea, i only hear it when i run my engine for a long period of time, more than normal, is it because of the heat? or something else?
my 95's 4A-FE shakes a lot in the morning and its all gone when day gets warm...
no...mine doesn't do that, only when i've driven it for a long non-stop time and when i drive it too hard, like in the high rpms for a long time. It doesn't shake, it just sounds like the pistons are not welll lubed, like something is rubbing against eachothers, i'm not sure, but i checked the oil level and its fine.....anybody with any ideas? or could it be something else?
it's a 5-speed manual, i can hear it when i go past 3000 rpm, no its not like a tick, it sounds like the regular engine sound when you rev but two of them, does it make sense? but yea.literially sounds like the pistons are rubbing with no engine oil, can this sound be from the intake? now that ren mentioned the afm, i guess it does make sense that when my engine gets hot than normal, the intake breathes and works harder, does this sound logical for the noise?
If two pistons were dry on a regular basis you would have siezed by now.
What leads you to believe that it is your pistons are rubbing?
Since you haven't really described the sound (other than that it is not a tick) I can't really come to any conclusion.
We'll need more info to make any judgment.

sounds logical to me.. my 89 GTS sounds tired and "forced" when its hotter and it makes a ticking noise which could be A. Low oil pressure or B. AFM working harder. I've also noticed that when this happens, my oil pressure gauge seems to be very low on pressure but as soon as you give it gas the pressure goes up to half or higher but the ticking noise still seems to be there. This is the reason why I raised my idle speed to stay at about 1000rpm because I rather have lesser gas mileage than have a damaged piston from low oil pressure.
I'm starting to think this could also be the oil sending unit starting to fail so that makes it kinda difficult to pin point.
A. is the motor doing this because the AFM is failing causing it to run a lower idle and causing the oil pressure to drop at the same time? B. is the oil pressure going low because of a bad oil sending unit, therefore causing the idle to drop and making the AFM do the ticking "I'm out of air" noise?? A lot of people have said its the AFM but I still don't discard the fact that the oil sending unit could also be a culprit.
thanks ren, now that i think about it, it makes more sense that it could be the afm breathing in too hot of air and reacting like it's choking or forcing in hot air? because it only happens when i drive it a lil too hard and hot, is this something i should be concern about or should i just leave it like that? will my car be fine? should i replace the afm? any tips on replacing afm?? such as expenses, time, etc?
this sounds familiar i have a 94 1.8 that does this but in addition my oil consumption goes up, i think the oil is over heating and thinning out then it gets by the rings easier it would also make sense that the film strenght decreases when it heats up, reason i think it might be this is that alot of other toyota engines have engine oil coolers like 4ag's and 4af's in a alltrac configuration I would suggest a heavier oil maybe 10w -40 may help a bit
