which gen corolla is the best

Hi, I'm new to the forum and am considering buying a toyota corolla. I just wanted to hear from the experts, which generation is the best? 93-97, 98-02, or 03-06 (sorry i don't know the uber-JDM chassis codes). I hear that the current generation lost the independant rear suspension, and is back at torsion beam, so what has the best handling? acceleration? All around fun factor? (I'm talking about 5spd only). Coming from a 4th gen civic wagon , I'm used to go-kart handling and a spine-tingling stiff ride, and I would like to keep the go-kart factor but lose the complete lack of bump absorbtion (if that's at all possible). Thanks in advance.

Amen.. it's the lightest out of the FWD bunch and we have coupes!

My fav out of the RWD Corollas would be the TE27s and 35/37s followed by the AE86s

AE82 is alot lighter than the AE92, but best is so subjective that you really cant compare.

this thread imo would be considered pointless. its very vague and not very precise at all. first off, are you talking about just usdm models just jdm models, or all? also to try to compare the rwd models to the fwd models is also pointless. if thats the case then my choice hands down goes to the ae101 levin gtz. its a sweet 2 door coupe with some real punch for what its worth.

Arguably, out of the factory would be AE-86 (RWD, 50/50 balance in the corners, drifting, tons of aftermarket) and Corolla XRS (As per Toyota's own claim: by far the quickest and extreme personality production Corolla in North America so far, 8400 rpm rev monster, fun to drive factor, build quality and exceptional handling for a FWD nose-heavy car) are the two best Corollas.

Its definately not 50/50...
If we look at car body rigidity, all newer cars would wash the old ones out of the ring. Modern computerized frame design is really alot better than the old method, and produced more rigid cars.

FWD: AE92, 88-92
RWD: AE86. 85-87

That's what I'd get! I have an SR5 AE92, and it's great and all... but lacks power, handling, and feels heavy.
