Count the mileage first, you might be surprised, they have a small fuel tank.
All modifications worsen the MPG, so if you want the best mpg, keep it FULLY STOCK.

also keep the fat foot off the throttle as much as you can.. use the light foot only if possible.

Momentum is your best friend. Above 40MPH, close windows. Up to you if you want to run AC (more fuel) or just the outside air blower (econo mode).

Inflate tires 2psi above recommended levels. Remove any excess weight in trunk or inside cabin. The only modification you can do is a tune up! Efficiency is what you want.

I've heard that for every 10km/hr over 90km/hr, you use 10% more fuel. So I guess for you, that'd be every 5-6mi/hr over 55?

That can't be true...my common highway speed is 85-90 mph.
I'm capable of getting well over 300 miles on one tank.
This is a stock 1.6 L mind you. Like Karugs said, keep the windows shut.

Another tip, drive over 55 everywhere you go. HIGHWAY MILEAGE

If you are on a long downhill run, just take it out of gear and turn the engine off. =P
Believe it or not, Ive actually done this before, but I dont do it regularly. It's just for fun =)
Just make sure that if you have an auto, you can start the engine in neutral.
My freind's '93 Prism cant, I learned that the hard way.

Anywho, Joeay was partially right about 55.
Although you shouldnt go OVER 55, you should make an effort to go 55 whenever you can.
Well, to be precise, you should go the speed at which your torque converter locks up if you've got an auto (it's about the same speed for a stick, whatever speed gives you the lowest rpms with enough power to keep pushing the car without additional throttle). That is the point at which you are getting the best mileage (on a flat, straight road). Even that graph agrees =)

It actually probably uses more fuel to start the car again than it would to have it in neutral and idling the whole way. Shift early. drive like my dad.

Forgot to mention, maintain the car's RPM at the spot where the torque is highest. That way you can maximize its potential. My diesel maxes at 2,450RPM, 170lb-ft for a 23yr old car. Around that I'm driving 45mph. Consistently get 80% city mileage of 27mpg.

what's up with the "throttle body spacer" i keep hearing about. does that actually improve gas mileage or is it just hype?

It's a diesel and you dont get peak torque until 2500rpms?
What kind of car is it? Is it a VW TDI?

SpeedballTrix,

It's a MB 300D Turbodiesel. Yes, peak torque is reached at 2450rpm. Peak HP is reached at 4250rpm, 120HP. Turbo kicks in around 1800rpm with a Garrett turbo. From a start to 1800rpm, there isn't much pull but after that you'll feel it. I think a KKK turbo (other models) will kick in at a lower RPM, which is better in city driving. With 21gallon tank, I don't refill until after 2 weeks usually. On a trip last year I averaged 25MPG running 80+mph in the high desert, with some spurts of up to 115mph and a trunkfull of stuff w/ 2 passengers and windows/sunroof open.

Albert, you're right. That's why you brake less and shift early. Get into high gear as much as possible but don't labor the engine. So with that, keep it within the peak torque range to maximize its power and its momentum.
