Rear brake drum rust

Corolla 2001 CE, about 87000kms.

It's been the third time that I have the rear brake drum rust within two years. It is only happened to the driver side. The rusts were cleaned up by three deallers and every time after first cleanup, in less than three months. It came back again. Then I have to take it to the dealer again. Second cleanup normally lasted more than one year.

Is there anyone experiencing the same problem? Is there any relative long term solution?

PS. Last time they have to machine the drum.

Any suggestion will be appreciated.

Actually, I have not seen it. It was done in dealer's garage. But, when I was turning left, it had "da da ..." noise. Can you let me why you ask?

Yeah surface rust on the outside doesn't matter at all. But if it is making a strange noise because of the rust or anything really get it checked out.

I was told it was on the edge of the drum. When it was turning left, the gap became smaller and caused the noise. I am tired of clean it up one a year. Is there long term solution?

When turning left? This is curious. Aren't the drum on the back wheels? They aren't the ones that steer.

I'd hate to pose as an expert on rust, being from the dry Southwestern US, but I paint my brake drums. I clean them up with a wire brush and paint the outside, the edge and that part of the inside that isn't shiny (since it is what contacts the pads). I use the black paint made for barbeque grills. I do this to make them easy to remove.

Little different with a canadian winter on them. I helped a buddy do his jack up the car use steel wool to ge the surface rust off, or sand blast it you have it. THen you can buy tremclad for rotors. We did it a year ago on his and they are still perfect. As for the noise i doubt its that,
