AE92 AE92 oil cooler help

OK, what's the deal with the AE92's oil cooler? There's something in the sump, apparently, there's a 'sandwich plate' between the block and the filter, and then some other actual cooler itself. What would this stuff look like? Would the 'actual cooler' be mounted to the radiator and look like a smaller radiator? Is that what the hose from the sump goes to? What's in the sump, anyway? Would putting this into my 7AGE engine-in-progress (stuffing the whatever into the 7A's pan and putting a return fitting and putting the mini-radiator behind the actual radiator) be a good idea? I know the 7A has a larger oil capacity, but the cooler oil from this, for a higher-performance engine...I don't know enough to judge!

The only picture I have of the 4A block that might show any kind of detail is this one. I didn't think to grab a shot of the funky mini-radiator on the AE92 itself...

And for the life of me it all looks too strange for me to KNOW whether there'd be a sandwich plate between the filter and the block. I don't even know what I'm looking for.

the "plate" between the block and oil filter is actually 2 parts (i have a couple spares lying around, i believe)..... the first part bolts to the block, the 2nd part bolts to the first part, and the oil filter screws onto the 2nd part. there are 2 lines that lead in/out of it....

if you get the unit, it will just bolt directly to your block. then go to a parts store and get some transmission oil cooleer hose and fuel injection hose clamps.... mount the oil cooler where you want it, and there ya go. the other thing you could do, as well, is to get an aftermarket oil filter relocation kit, then run the lines from the filter to the cooler, then back to the block

as far as i know the line to the sump is just a return line. I have one of these coolers in my basement that i want to add to my 7a-fe. the lines go from the block plate to the cooler then from the cooler to the sump

PS on a 7afe oil pan there is a allan bolt pratically straight down from the oil filter on the aluminum transmission stiffener thing that i think the banjo fitting will bolt straight to

i was wrong, sorry. there is only one line coming off the adapter. the return line is fed directly into the 4age oil pan. you will have to drill/tap a hole in the 7a pan. the 4a pans don't fit a 7a block.

Something to bolt the banjo fitting to right on the 7A's pan would be good. I took a look at the 4A shortblock today, and got the junkyard to pull the cooler (it's smaller than I'd've thought) and given the position of the headers in relation to the 7A block, putting those sandwich plates on the block is going to result in having the filter sit about a half to a quarter inch from the back of the headers--not a good idea, and certain to negate any cooling advantages from the extra line.

When I get the cam gears down to the shop, I'll take a look at the oil pan for the 7A and see if there's anything easily adaptable.

welcome to 4age land..... it will still help, since it runs from the filter through the cooler then back into the pan. However, japanese cars with 4age's never had these (including s/c corollas/mr2's and 20V cars).

another idea is to look and see what type of setup the mr2's use (mk1). it has the same adapter, but runs the lines into a cooler that is a main coolant pipe. this way, the oil actually stays at the proper running temp of the engine while still getting cooled down.

all of that being said, my ae92 with smallport nor my mr2 with ae101 gze use an oil cooler at this time (have all parts necessary, though)
