Migs is moving to Ontario in 10 mths...bring my Coupe?
I'll be spending two years at the Canadian Automotive institute in Barrie, and although it was planned for me to drive one of my AE86's to keep me company...I'm hearing that it may not be such a good idea.
I've got the Coupe...$$$$$$$$ and loads and loads of personal labour put into it which is my baby
...and there's my Hatchback...the completely OEM, rust free, extra nice hachi, that I will probably own until the day I die
I hear the salt is insane when winter rolls around, but is it really THAT bad. Even if I take the time to prep the car however I can with undercoating/oiling and frequent washing?
I've seen the pics and vids from Shannonville, and I really don't want to miss the opportunity to drift my Coupe on a real race course, and run bumper to bumper with other drivers who (I hope) also know what they're doing
What do you guys think?

soon to be polluting this message board too!
if u don't believe him... look at mine... I'm keeping mine sheltered for winter...
:-?
winter in canada sucks... the only thing that compares in the states is... Alaska? :P
the salt will really take it's toll on ur car... because the salt isn't splashed at ur car... it's thrown.... highways can be brutle if they lay fresh layers of salt... trucks drive by and hurl the salty snowy mixture at you
and might I add this ain't table salt... raw big pieces of salt... like pebbles....
so decide for urself... if u love ur cars that much... u will know wat to do
to give you an idea of how much salt they use, sometimes, after it warms up a bit and the snow melts, you can see HUGE piles of salt in the intersecitons (i'm guessing they salt those areas extra heavily, becaseu they dont' want people trying to come to a stop and then sliding right into the intersection)
last winter, i distinctly remember seing a PILE of salt about 9 feet long by 2-3 feet wide outside my parent's house..
and if you see what some of the ae86's are like in ontario, you'll realize the true definition of borohachi.. my first two were very much super-ontario-boro-hachi's.. remember that black hatch the Noel had pics of , it was a donor car? they were like that..
when i had my red hatch, the PO told me that before she moved to ontario from alberta, there was no rust on the car.. when i bought it, a mere 1 winter after she moved, the hatch was perforated with rust (right through).. of course, she had no idea what oil spraying was..
so yeah its bad, but if you take care of it, wash it, oil spray it, and its only for 1 winter.. i don't think it will be *that* bad.. after all, even most of the nice ae86's that us ontarians own have seen at least a few ontario winters.. but I would take the hatch, not the coupe

jeeeeeeeeeeez...why the hell don't you guys get pictures of all the salt?
Right now, I think I may pick up a super super cheap AE82/Borohachi/Old Accord, and drive it for the winter, then somehow get my butt back out to Calgary and bring the Coupe to Barrie when it gets warm.
I NEED to take my Coupe to Shannonville...you don't understand....oh man...
I've been driving my AE92 GT-S in salt since I bought it new in '89. Ask the guys from the last meet, it is very clean & solid. I do wax it once / month, oil spray it & rustproof (sic) it annually. I can tell you that I have replaced calipers & brakes many times due to salt. Get ready to brush up on your touch-up skills. I have seen numerous western cars come out here clean, only to fester at ever stone chip that never drew attention to itself out west. You are probably better off getting a winter beater. Even the underhood bolts get corroded, and who has ever seen a leaking, rusted cowl intake plenum? I am usually depressed from the moment road salt hits the streets here; I cringe at the stuff. You can save it from the ravages of salt but you pretty much have to be a masochist to do so (ask my neighbours!)
I'm thinking that this winter should be the 1st that the old girl stays salt-free. It really deserves it although I'm confident that I could keep on top of it.
Salt sucks crap in cleveland when it snows i think the city decides to dump as much salt on the road as they can its crazy i wish i could get a hold of a beater but i think i am going to drive the rolla in the winter the only advantage i have is i work in a body shop with the detail shop right up stairs so u all know i will be washing and waxing the car in the winter. hope this winter donen't take a toll on everyone's cars this year.
Mig's Nice to see you on here, we talked breifly on club4 a while ago. Love your site to, very informative. Ya the salt here is bad. Once you go north of Toronto, they start using more of a sand/salt mixture which they dont use in T.O. So there is less of a high concentrate of salt. Most people use winter beaters if they can so I would recomend it. Plus it snows more outside of the city...
ciao bro.

Oh come one guys it's not THAT bad. Ya they use alot of salt but you just gotta take care of the car.
My dad's got a 93 Nissan Quest Minivan that he bought brand new. Never rustproofed 104k on it. He's retired but he drives it every other day or so all year round. Because he's retired whenever there's a warm-ish day he uses his power washer and sprays the whole thing down to remove all the salt. Lemme tell you there's not a spot of rust on this 9 or 10 year old van.
As long as you get yearly oil rust proofing it's fine. Your car's got no rust on it now? Then get it sprayed. We've got many many Preludes in TPC from the early 90's and as long as you care for it properly there's no rust.
Oh and I just wanted to mention that the 86 IS my winter car
