XRS Reverse Beeping - can't take it anymore.

Sorry to bring this up, I know its been mentioned a few times.
I made an appointment with Toyota to have the reverse beep disabled.

Its going to cost me about $100. But there is another reasons why I am scared to do this.
The Wiring to disable the beep is behind the gauges. I am paranoid about finger prints/scratches on the inside of my gauges or simply not put back straight after being removed.

Anyone have suggestions or experience on this topic?
I am considering doing this operation on my own.

Thanks,

Wouldn't it be easier to disable the beep on the outside instead? Or am I thinking of something else?

I don’t know where on the outside? You can only hear the beep inside, it is to warn the driver that he is in reverse since reverse is close to 1st.

On one of my cars (not a toyota) i just took the dash apart, left it in reverse to keep the beeper going.

Then hunted down the speaker and poked a screw driver though it. Nice and quite now

I have considered that. I think the speaker its under the steering wheel somewhere. Just not sure on how to take it apart. Probably worth a try though.

What did the speaker look like, how small?

Its annoying, but so are the million other beeps in the XRS. Its just to make sure everyone is responsible and to prevent a possible reverse accident. It actually kept me from doing it when I FIRST got the car.

I do seem to think that there needs to be a lockout mechanism similar to VW and Audis that require a push down to get to reverse.

my friend removed that little speaker on his '98 rolla
he had to rip apart all the dash to find the tiny speaker.
it was located near the steering column
