LSD for ME

Hey check out my OEM LSD:
http://www.pbase.com/clumzy/ae86_lsd2

out of an '85 with the '85 axels. Should be a straight plop in. Anyone have a rear-end that I could install this into ... that way to put it on the car all I would have to do is drop the rear end on there now and slap the LSD'ed one on there.

Anybody know how to install this puppy?

i think it'll be more work than its worth to swap the entire rear end than to just switch axles and third member.. that rear axle housing is pretty frickin' heavy, i'd imagine

besides, if you have the axles all ready to go, the job of replacing the axles and 3rd member shouldn't take more than a few hours

Axel? Where did I get that from? Isn't that how you spell Ed Murphy's character from Beverly Hills Cop? Ah well ... axle it is.

Ya that 3rd member thing is a frickin' beast. When you first said 3rd member I was like whoa .. thinkin' of something else there :P

40lb's for the LSD unit and 20 for the axles. Very very heavy ... and the guy shipped it UPS to a friend of mine in MN. Then he shipped it from Thunderbay via CanPost ... he won't tell me the cost cuz he knows I'll pay him back for it. Dam chinese thing.

Anyways, I'm not "certain" about the install but I think it should be more labour intensive than intellectually difficult.

Next question .. anyone got a shop I could go to FOR SURE and/or wanna help?

nah, you don't need to take it to a shop, the hardest part is installing the LSD into the 3rd member, which you already have done

so all you ahve to do is (in a nutshell):

1. drain the diff
2. remove the rear calipers and discs
3. remove the 4 bolts on each side that hold the axle to the backing plate (not sure what that part is called)
4. use the slid hammer and pop those axles out

5. disconnect driveshaft from third member
6. remove third member from axle housing (i think its like 10 bolts)

then do the reverse when putting everything back in, with the LSD 3rd member and LSD axles..

done and done.

Hey Jerry,
Applewood automotive installed my LSD for me this summer, I didn't have LSD axles so they had to cut them and the LSD I supplied didn't have the bearings installed either. Just call them when you're ready and they can take care of any specialty type work for AE86's, this is straight forward for them.

905-275-1919, ask for Louis or Ullises and let them know you're my friend.

I replied on the DoriKaze board for ya. It's a very simple procedure putting the LSD in yourself, and it's another chance to learn more about your car. But if you've got money to burn...

Ya got some good info over on DK. When I meant "shop to goto" I actually meant a shop that I could DIY it at ... hehehe.

Anyways, I've gotta talk to a couple buddies to see if I can get an evening at his uncle's shop. I'd hate to do this in the cold and without air tools.

Oh and according to the Toy 86 service manual there's a few things that need to be replaced (ie. bearings, gaskets, nicknacks) ... I'm gonna scan the relevant pages tonight and see what you guys think.

bearings and gaskets SHOULD always be replaced imo.

of course, if you plan to abuse the shit out of your lsd and drop it to put in a newer/better one, then i wouldn't worry too much about the bearings. but seals and gaskets are a must!

have you considered getting the lsd rebuilt prior to installation?

I agree. I'm not gonna go cheap on the bits and pieces. If the manual says they should be replaced them I'm inclined to believe them.

I've considered it but some people on DK said what I could do is just install and drive it to see if it's really required. Since I still have the open diff and axles I can just swap those back in if I need to get the LSD rebuilt.

That said, do you have a line on anyone who could rebuild it? How much would that cost? I know the rebuild kit from Toyota is in the ~$250 range.
