Hello, iv'e been driving a Corolla for about 5 years, and i've only had minor problems (alternater, tire wheel, some lights don't turn on in the lower dash). It has 150k miles on it, and it's a 95. I'm thinking of getting a new Corolla next year, and was wondering if someone could point out any differences in the '06 models.
I'm kind of an automotive novice, so i've got another question;
What are alloy wheeles and how do they help in a car's performance?

Hi Frank welcome to T Nation..., If your talking about comparing differences between 05-06's hardly nothing other then the vin number...The 06's are out already if your going to wait till next year to buy why not wait to see what the 07's look like? They might be coming out with a new generation.....I always thought alloys were just for looks, maybe I'm wrong...Hope this helps....Radd Guy....
From what I have heard about the newer corolla's, the quality isn't there anymore. Been a few posts on here about tranny's going on the newer toyota's.
Welcome Minion. Your generation Corolla (1993-1997) is arguably the best-looking and likely the overall most solid generation built. I know I like your generation the best. If there are no major problems with the car, I say drive it to the ground. One thing I love about owning older cars is that I can find parts cheaper at wreckers, and I might be able to get away with paying $1500 in repairs in one year vs. having to pay $300 per month (=3600/year) AND a down payment on a new car, AND having to bend over to the dealer to get maintenance done to maintain my warranty.
But if you are not automotively inclined nor have a mechanic you trust, buying new might give you more peace of mind.
Alloy wheels are basically aluminum wheels that are usually bigger than stock steel rims, so they may improve handling and look nicer. But the drawback of alloy wheels are that they pit after a few years, esp. when you drive in winter, and with age, they tend to leak air from the beads. Steel rims you don't run into these problems, so with alloys, just make sure you get the tires off them every couple years, and have a tire shop clean off the rims and add some bead sealer before re-installing tires.

WHAT!?! since when are the 1993-1997 models the best looking corolla? ae92 gts by far the best looking one. welcome to the forums minion(lol im new too but i seem to fit right in pretty quickly)
i am gettin' the 06 Corolla. Like one of the other guys said, there is really no difference between the 05 and 06.
I am gettin' the Corolla S this monday. Looks nice, but performance isn't the best. I can live with it. it has 126 HP. Mileage is excellent. And I've heard it is lot roomier than the previous models. seems like my 05 civic (which was in a nasty accident. i am replacin it w/ the new corolla).
For the money, i would actually get the 06 Civic because they just redisgned it and it has much more safety features standard on the car if safety is your concern. i can't afford the civic. insurance is 2 high for me.
Welcome aboard!! I just recently purchased an '06 S and love it. I have about 1300 miles on it and gets mid 30's for gas mileage combined city/highway. Its comfortable, quiet except the engine seems a little noisy but I love it. Rides nicer than my '99 GM Malibu and based on Corolla history, it should last along time.

The corolla S gets insane gas milage. Good buy.
If you want power, the XRS is by far the way to go, stock it is quicker than the supercharged Type S.

I'm new here too, but a few cents to throw in. I have a 2003 with 50k miles, which is the first of the new generation, and I haven't had any drivetrain issues at all. (I have an automatic though, and the problems I've heard about are from the standard.) In fact, I have to say I prefer the 2003+ to the older Corollas simply because of the more powerful VVT engine. The older Corolla I drove was a bit of a dog. And it gets better gas mileage to boot. Plus, more leg room for back passengers.
After 2 1/2 years I still love it.

I have had no problems with my 2004 corrolla le. I bought it brand new. I now have 30,000 miles on it and about 2,000 miles ago. The car started performing better.
From what i hear. Ouf of the 2003-2006 models the 2004 models seem to be the best so maybe try a used 2004?
