4A-FE or something else????

Forgive my ignorance on this "red top" stuff, but I notice they're trying to sell this motor as a 4A-FE, but my Prizm certainly doesn't have that "S" on it, painted in red.

The 16Valve part is rather clear, but I'm guessin' the 's' means somethin' more??

30-40K Japan motor would be kinda' nice.

(Never realized how skinny these motors were.....LOL)

EFI-S indicates that these engines are in fact 4A-FHEs, not 4A-FEs... Those of you familiar with Toyota's engine designations already know that an H in the engine code (after the -) indicates an engine with some sort of upgrade to the head and induction system in general for the sole purpose of boosting output. It fell into disuse in the early to mid '90s, with only a few made, including 5A-FHE, 4A-FHE, 5E-FHE, 2L-THE. Note that the H versions of the 4A and 5A disappeared when the second generation of F-head A-series engines debuted (for those of you who are counting, this means the shift from the early 4/5/6A-F/FE to the later type 4/5/7A engines), as the newer versions' output met or exceeded that of the earlier H versions, as well as attaining lower brake specific fuel consumption (BSFC) than even the standard versions.

All this talk is nothing without some hard numbers, so here goes... the numbers included are only the approximate averages of the output of these engines as installed in a variety of JDM Toyota vehicles...

Early 1.5 5A-FE
93 bhp @ 6000 rpm
95 lb-ft @ 3200 rpm

Early 1.5 5A-FHE EFI-S
104 bhp @ 6000 rpm
98 lb-ft @ 4800 rpm

Late 1.5 5A-FE
104 bhp @ 6000 rpm
100 lb-ft @ 4800 rpm

Early 1.6 4A-FE
100 bhp @ 5600 rpm
101 lb-ft @ 4400 rpm

Early 1.6 4A-FHE EFI-S
109 bhp @ 6000 rpm
105 lb-ft @ 4800 rpm

Late 1.6 4A-FE
113 bhp @ 6000 rpm
109 lb-ft @ 4800 rpm

Late 1.8 7A-FE (excluding 7A-FE Lean Burn)
118 bhp @ 6000 rpm
116 lb-ft @ 4400 rpm

As you can see, the differences aren't that huge, but still probably worth mentioning.

Never ever heard of a 4A-FHE. The head still seems exactly the same to a normal 4A-FE.

I guess it might be useful to give output for U.S. models, too...

4A-FE:
AE92 102 bhp @ 5800 rpm, 101 lb-ft @ 4800 rpm
'93-'95 Federal emissions AKA "49-state", Canada 105 bhp @ 5800 rpm, 100 lb-ft @ 4800 rpm
'93-'95 Calif. Emissions, also for Northeastern states 100 bhp @ 5800 rpm, 100 lb-ft @ 4800 rpm
'96-'97 Federal emissions: 50-state, no separate CA emissions package 100 bhp @ 5600 rpm, 105 lb-ft @ 4400 rpm

7A-FE:
'93-'94 49-state/CDN 115 bhp @ 5600 rpm, 115 lb-ft @ 2800 rpm
'93-'94 Calif./NE 110 bhp @ 5600 rpm, 115 lb-ft @ 2800 rpm
'95-'97 50-state/CDN 105 bhp @ 5200 rpm, 117 lb-ft @ 2800 rpm

The extra helping of torque from the later 50-state models came from tighter fuel injection control and minor tweaking. Each injector was independently controlled, while the earlier E10 models had grouped injectors (1 and 3, 2 and 4 fired simultaneously). E9 models (1st gen 4A-FE) had an all-at-once injection system. The earlier models had 6300 rpm redlines, while the redline on 50-state models was only 5800 rpm. The CA emissions package included an EGR system as well as a twin cat, twin lambda sensor system, thus choking engine output a bit. This was mainly due to the increased exhaust backpressure from the twin cats.
