**FIXED**94 corolla serious problem!!

Still having troubles ever since the bad luck of the break in. Currently, the car will start when the distributor is TDC, but runs rough. It will die or studder when the gas pedal is pushed in. If it's done slower, it doesn't seem to have as much trouble.
I can advance the dist. and it will run smoother but still has the trouble of handling quick accelerations.

I have new: Cap, rotor, plugs, plug wires, new TPS, cleaned throttle body.

Anyone have any guesses as to what to check? This thing has caused more trouble for us that ever imagined. It's keeping me from going to work and making money

I'm currently having similar problems on my 94 4afe. I was privledged enough to hook up to a real nice snap-on scanner and it told me that it's an igniter control module. A code 14. Right now I have my distrutor turned just about all the way clock wise to lose the hesitation. It idles a little rough, but it is way more drivable. Can anyone take a picture off the inside of there hood for me? I have a replaced hood and no sticker to set my timing to. I'd like to get my timing to where it's supposed to be and bring it back to the dealer (6 month warranty). Thanks in advance.

my biggest confusion is that there are NO engine codes. Even when i unplug the TPS there are no codes.

10º BTDC... same for all '93-'97 4A-FE and 7A-FEs.

The ignitor is my first thought...

If a distributor has been replaced and the timing is way off, check that the shaft was correctly aligned when the distributor was installed. The end shaft has two wings. One of them is rounded. This must align with a rdige on the distributor when you install it.

The 10 deg BTDC assumes that you have jumpered the two appropriate connectors in the "Check connector" box and the "check engine" light has come on.

If the timing belt was replaced, check that this was done correctly. Otherwise you won't be timing relative to true TDC compression. You might be seeing the notch at TDC exhaust.

Yes, the timing was off and was properly set back to TDC and the problem described is where the car is at now. I can get the car to start with little problem. I can even put it into gear and drive for a little ways but it will die sometimes when i stop or when i give it hard acceleration.

it shouldn't be right at TDC it should be at 10deg BTDC with TE1 and E1 jumpered in the diagnostic connector and the engine warm.

a good check to do is to time it properly then remove the diagnostic jumper restart the car and with the light observe what its doing should be moving around the 10 mark +/- 5 deg then give it gas it should advance to 15-20 deg the more gas the more advance.

if this checks out ok id start to look at the fuel system.

Fixed!! There was a crack on the coil allowing it to jump the timing. Thanks all!
