transmission/OD shift

i noticed something strange about the 1991 corolla i just bought. it has 128000 miles and seems to be in fine shape mechanically, but when i start it up and drive down the highway (55mph) it wont shift into overdrive until i have gotten about a mile from home, then it finally shifts into OD. is this normal for these transmissions? why would it do something like that? also, what are some things i should look at or watch for, mechanically, on a 91 with this many miles? thanks.

My '90 will go into OD when its cold.

However, it is a know problem that converters may not lockup when cold.
The funny thing is I have never experienced it personally.
Ive driven many autos in my life and the TC will lockup even when cold.

Maybe Im just lucky?

But anyway, I wouldn't be worried because according to my research in the last 20 seconds it's apparently pretty normal for that to happen =P

Does it have an OD button??? I know my dad's 84 Toyota Van used to do that.. once a while it wouldn't go into OD and sometimes it would go on and off from it. Turns out the button was dead and finally wasn't able to hold the OD on all the time, got a cheap one from a wreckers and it fixed the problem.

maybe if your toyotas have always gone into 4th 'cold' youve always been driving at 3rd shift speeds until your car warmed up a little anyway, or you live in a warmer area? or maybe it IS my button, or maybe it doesnt matter!
