Question about 89 corolla sr5 strut/shocks

To anyone with a better knowledge than me about replacing old struts/shocks

I own a 89 corolla sr5 AE92 2dr coupe. My front struts are believed to be worn as I was told when I had my alignment. However I plan on purchasing new struts for the front and rear of my car. I am currently looking at the KYB GR-2 struts and was wondering if I'm able to go with a cheaper brand of strut mounts, or is it really necessary that I purchased the KYB branded ones?

No, you can go with cheaper ones but be advised that cheaper ones don't last as long as OEM or even other expensive ones. Actually KYB are not as good as OEM but they're better than the cheap ones you can buy. I went with cheap ones because the OEM mounts would cost me $140CDN each from Toyota

Thanks for the help REN69

Where and what brand of mounts did you get? I saw a Pepboys ad selling Monroe strut mounts for about 7.99 ea, but it was an October sale and I wasn't sure if they even would have the correct part for my corolla or even to pair with the KYB struts. I'm just hoping to get something decent but cheap as I also want to buy lowered springs to replace the old ones.

Just look around! Monroe's are quite good and make sure you have the right model! I'm fitting my 92-er with yellow Koni's & lowering springs real soon and I'm anxious to the new behaviour of the car...

Is's a pity U do ont live in The Netherlands because I'm seeing a lot of second-hand Monroe shocks over here at the moment...

Good luck & keep on rollin'!

I'd say go with the KYB if is not more money than the monroe's.. $7.99 or 79.99?? I doubt the strut mounts for the AE92 are $7.99 maybe you read on the add "from $7.99" OEM are probably about $100 US or so, so I could see any aftermarket being about $50 or so. I think the KYB mounts for me were about $70-80 CDN at the time so they can't be too expensive than that.. the ones I bought were $40 each I believe I can't remember the brand but they were supposed to be made in Japan.

Yeah, I'll probably will just go with the KYB mounts that way I'll know everything will fit perfectly.

I was planning on getting KYB GR-2 struts all around for the SR5, since my rears are non existent and my fronts are leaking. You're saying they aren't as good as stock? I'm getting Tokico Illuminas for the MR2... so I'm short on cash lol
