04 Corolla chipped paint getting rusted

Hi,
I just found about this forum and this is my first post.
I have a 2004 Toyota Corolla , few months ago I noticed while driving on highway small stones bounced out from road and struck the roof, when I examine that I found 3 chipped paints, each of them equal to quarter of the size of a finger nail.

I tend to forget about them and only this week I noticed rust is building in them... so in a panic I went to Toyota dealership and they estimate me $436 as he was saying he has to sand the whole roof paint and repaint the whole roof.

That sounds insane .... so I boaght a touchup paint from the parts department as I know the paint code (1E6) ...... now my question is can I do it my self? if yes then is there any guide for that available any where...... OR should I bring it to body shop for professional repair,

What are the chances of building rust again if I do it myself?

Thanks for the suggestions in advance.

I would imagine if the rust isn't removed it will, just come back again and again..although I'm not sure what the ebst coruse of action in this case would be. Best wait for someone mroe knowledgeable to reply.

Thos toyota touchup paints dont come with epoxy primer. I'd take it to a paintshop, not the dealership and have them deal with it, atleast get an estimate.

take diet coke and toothbrush to remove the rust from the dimples/chips. Then after all is cleaned (soapwater+cleandry+polish+wax) then i'd use those touch up paints. If its a small noticable chip, then you can even add some nailpolish clear thingie to every wash. All your doing is 'DELAYING' the rusting. The rust will keep coming back until you deal with it right (sanddown and then repaint, and yes it can cost close to 200-400 dollars).

No dont bother doing all that you can buy a can do it all yourself. Get a can of touch up paint from your dealership, the use a dremel and grind away the rust as well as a bit of paitn around then use automotive sandpaper so you get all the rust. Buy a can of Rust Killer from crappy tire spread that over the bare metal let it dry then use your touch up paint. Rust is gone forever as long as you got it all in the first place with the dremel and sand paper. I did this to my front fender of my car last winter and it looks brand new.

yea they do have to redo the whole roof and match your paint and shit, thats sounds rather resonable actually... and yea if you just cover the rust it will eventually come back to haunt you and make you with you had got it fixed before

I actually am thinking of selling this car next year (when it will paid off) so thats why I'm just looking for a kinda temporary solution.... I did filled one of the chips with the touchup paint this afternoon.... but I didn't remove extra paint though and some rust was still there, so given that is that even worth doing all these extra precautions or should I just fill the other 2 chips with touch-up paint too without actually removing extra paint and rust?

On my chips, I use a Nick-Sander, http://www.europeancarweb.com/auto_tools/0106ec_tool/ , and follow that with some rust treatment or converters, such as EXTEND by Loctite or Klean Strip rust converter. Allow that to dry completely, and then I use the touchup paint.

I have never had rust return in any of the chips I have used the rust treatments or converters.
