Just wondering what the swap would cost me, either to do it myself or to have someone else do it? figuring lots of people on here have done it so some of you will know the answer to both of those. And what ammount of time am I looking at to have my car off the road?
and is it harder to put the 4age 20 in rather than the regular 4age?
it all depends on MANY factors...... ie, what car you have, what EMS you want to run, what you want to be done to the motor, if you want to rebuild it, if you want to tune it up, what tranny you want.......

I've done the complete 4AGE 16v swap in my SR5.
In time it's no that bad, putting the engine, tranny took about 1 days
we took about half a day in this to change water pump, clutch and other things just to make sure the engine will be okay.
I just took the complete engine and dash aharness from a GTS to make the conversion also did took the ECU. this took about half a day to install.
Then I had all the hoses in the engine bay to figure out where to plug. This was the longuest part since I didn't had a GTS near by to find where to plug everything. This took a day an many trip to local junk yard to get the hoses and see where they all plug. If you know where to plug them and have them in hand it shouldn't be more than an hour.
Then you just start it up. I still have some things to do like the light wiring wich is not the same on GTS and SR5 dash harness but other than that you're all done.
I did the swap with a friend and neither of us had done a complete engine swap before or had seen a 4AGE in action.
so basicly, the 16V swap is not that hard, for the 20V you would have to find the ECU and surely you will have to rewire the dash harness. This will be your biggest deal since all the rest is pretty much plug and play!
But I would ratter test my aptitude in a easier project like the 16V before going with JDM specs engines.
If you need other infos I'll be glad to help you out!
i have a question about wiring.
do i have to replace the instrument cluster if i wanna do a 4age 20 swap on a AE101?
and since my original cluster is for automatic which has no tachometer, should i get a manual AE101 cluster? if so, would the redline zone be accurate? or should i jsut get an aftermarket tachometer?
ok,i got a AE71 83' rolla, 4AC engine. i bought a 4AGE FWD but my car is RWD,i know i can convert but i wanna know in DETAIL what i need and how to install the engine and equitment. plz anybody help

Hey mate theres heaps of info out there, if you know where to look try these pages for a start.
Also you may want to find a new gearbox (I'm assuming you have a K50 at the moment).
A k-50 will do the trick for a little while if you cant find a t-50, your going to need the backing plate off the 4ac that goes between motor and box. As others have said use 4age flywheel 3a clutch and 4age pressure plate.
I think when we i did this ages ago you have to space the release bearing up abit as it wont engage otherwise. Also keep the 4ac water pump it is the same as a rwd 4age which is usefull if since you can use the rwd alternator mount and rwd water pump pulley.
Also your going to need a rwd intake manifold (you can cut and shut a fwd so the throttle is pointing in the right direction)
