few questions about corollas

Just got my new corolla today, noticed a few differences from my neon.

How come headlights get the side of road so good (not just strait)

How come ride is so much better and handling?

How come acceleration is so much better (130HP vs 132) corolla is heavier car

just want to expand my knowledge of rollas

You can not even begin to compare the neon and the corolla I dont think. I have driven newer Neons and they jsut feel cheap, they are loud and uncomfrotable. Even my 97 Corolla I had ws a better car than the newer neons I have driven.

What year was your NEon. As for the lighting the technology changes pretty quick with lighting. Ride and handling again it is jsut better all around car. and it is newer nothing is worn out yet. Acceleration is determined more by torque than HP. also gear ratios and things like that can play a big difference in it. The corolla may have a lower first gear ratio or lower differential ratio so taht can affect it.

All I can say is: You get what you pay for.

Corollas cost more than Neons. (Both in MSRP and especially in terms of what you actually pay)

Your extra money goes to buy a car that's better designed, plain and simple. Corollas aren't perfect- very few cars are- but they are pretty damn good for what you pay for them.

Acceleration is better because the engine is far more technologically advanced...VVTi gives it much better response for starters...Not to mention the car probably has better gear ratios...

The Corolla and Neon are about the same weight. The difference is less than 50lb for curb weight. But the VVTi probably helps out a bit with low end torque and acceleration of the Corolla. That and the gear ratio and final drive ratios are probably different.

The drag coefficients might have a little something to do with it also. The Neon is 0.34 and the Corolla is 0.296. Strangely, the Neon SRT4 is 0.35. Though this is still better than the Chevy Cavalier at 0.38

The head light reflectors are designed to be different shape and output a different light pattern. If you're Neon used 9004 headlight bulbs, that explains a lot also. 9004 bulbs suck! They're about as good as sealed beams.

What's wrong with sealed beams? My 73 MarkIV has em' and light output is better than my 93 Camry's. Are different sealed beams better or worse than others?

The Corolla feels heavier how?

Steering? It could be the Corolla has less steering assist than the Neon for better road feel. It could also be variable power assist on the steering where the Neon might be the same assist at all times.

The Corolla may have wider tires to grip the road better compare to the Neon. The suspension might be tuned differently. Ie the Corolla might have tighter suspension than the Neon. Less body roll. The Corolla uses Macpherson struts in front and torsion bar in the rear. Torsion bar is not truely independent suspension but better than Macpherson struts, but not as good as double wishbone and multi-link for handling.

Weird...My experience with sealed beams have not been that great. I had a '91 Prelude and the light output looked like a pencil beam with very little illumination to the sides. The lights on my 90 Corolla were marginally better and it used 9004 bulbs.

My 2000 Camry's lights were very much improved. It uses 9006/5 bulbs. Polycarbonate cover on multisurface reflector...There was a lot more light to the sides and the light looked more evenly distributed compared the pencil beams on the Prelude.
